Comfy seat for my Clyde of a brother, recommendations?
 

He is 6'3 1/2" 240ish, wants to be 220-225, cycling will help him accomplish that goal. I want to surprise him and get him a nice seat. I've seen discussions on notched seats as well, I'm just curious to see what the bigger dudes are rolling on. I'm a little shorter and I go about 175 so my opinion means nothing in this forum. Thanks in advance.

Brooks B-17. I'm 6'0" and at 250, I don't even feel the Brooks.

6'5" 240: Brooks B-17 was comfortable from the start.

6"3" 330# I'm riding the Avenir comfort that came with my Raleigh Venture 3.0, and I've got no complaints.

I'm 6'1" and 260 pounds. I have 2 road bikes. On my Orbea Vuelta I have a ISCA Titanio Dekar. On my Trek 2100 a Selle Italia Flite. That said. Everyone has there own personal preference for saddles. I would suggest not getting him a saddle, but a gift card or a professional fit. Whats more important than saddle brand is fit. To insure comfort. The saddle must be fit to the rider and properly fitted to the bike as well. There are many high quality saddles to choose from. Fiz'k, Selle, Brook, and Terry are a few to mention. But I'm sure a bike fitting and a gift card for the saddle would be a most welcome surprise.

+1 I concur. Saddles are very personal and let's just say intimate ..... I've tried a few different saddles and I have found that an inexpensive E3 Form Gel Saddle is the most comfortable for me.

Regardig fit, I believe Specialized has a device to determine the proper size saddle. It's all about the sit bones.

I've had real good luck with my Specialized Avatar Gel 142mm, but like Bone Head mention, saddles are going to be based on the users own specific needs. Highly recommend the Specialized butt-o-meter measuring device. Discovered I was riding the wrong sized saddle.

I’ve only been riding about 2 months. So judge my opinion by that… But after just 2 weeks I realized the seat that came with my Raleigh hybrid was not for me. After MUCH reading on the subject, I bought a Brooks B67. A sprung seat designed for a more upright rider…

So... I put a hundred dollar seat on a three hundred dollar bike. And, I think it was worth every penny.

My limit on the bike before I changed the seat was ten miles. After ten miles I would have gladly taken the seat off of the bike and sat on the post… But last weekend with the Brooks I did a thirty mile ride, and stopped only because the scheduled ride was over. I could have done more.

I am not saying a Brooks seat is for everyone. But your friend will know the right seat when he has it.

There are LOTS of choices out there. The bike shop my friends and I have been going to will let you try seats out, (for a short time) and return them if they do not feel just right. (Although they do not offer Brooks. I got my off of ebay.) So perhaps he can “test ride” a few to find what is right for him.

trek shops also have a butt pad that you sit on, then they measure your "sit bone" spacing. I've been riding 132 mm wide Flite saddles for years, but tried a Trek/Bontrager saddle that was 147 mm wide, and the wider saddle was fantastic. Get measured and then buy the right size sadddle, dont assume that heavy riders need wider saddles
