Gel leaking

Anyone ever have a problem with gel leaking in gel bib shorts? I got a pair of Performance Century gel shorts last month, and the gel has started leaking out of the chamois. I have an pair of XLs; is it that they are too small, and I've damaged the gel from wearing them? Or is it just a manufacturer defect? I have another pair, of XXL, and they are fine, although they are too big on me. I've had those shorts a year.

I use Performace Bibs and haven't had a problem. I'm guessing yours have a defect. Their "100% Satisfaction Guarantee" should apply in this case. I have returned items at a local Performance retail store ...no questions asked.

I used to use Perf gel shorts. I had that problem after they aged a bit. After the dismount, the saddle had a wet layer. The new design had a gel fork shape towards the front of the chamois. That's when I quit using them. The gel would roll up leaving me with no cush at the front. Haven't used them in years.

I did once, but they had quite a few miles on them.

You can return them. Performance is very good about returns.

+1 Performance is great on returns. I recently returned a pair of bibs myself, no questioned asked.

Oh yes, they exchanged them for me. My concern was that my weight in the saddle damaged them. I'd heard from an uber-Clyde poster that the gel in his Performance shorts leaked, and he attributed it to his 300 + pounds.

I had a pair of Nashbar gel shorts that leaked in the washing machine when they got pretty old. Made a mess of everything in that wash load. I generally stay away from gel chamois now.

The ironic thing about this is that I was exchanging defective shorts when I've all but given up riding. :(

Why is that?

It could be worse. "Style Man" in Bicycling this month answers a question about a rider who had 'foam' leaking from his shorts. Not enough time in the rinse cycle when washing was the source of the problem. Detergent in your chamois sounds uncomfortable. :(

Foaming is probably much more noticable than a gel leak......... Hmmmm ...Now there's an idea !! Could be a novel way of preventing those pesky, uninvited wheelsuckers !! :innocent:
