Help with new bike CAAD9 6 VS Trek 1.5 VS Trek 2.1

I just purchased my Trek 1.2 about 2 weeks ago and really got into cycling. I've already found the weaknesses of the 1.2, mostly components. I knew nothing about components before I bought the bike but have learned quickly that the 2203 shifters/front dr are not going to work for me. Also I bought a 60cm and I'm pretty sure its quite a bit too big for me. The bike shop has been nice enough to allow me to trade up the bike to and get full credit for the 1.2. The shop only carries C'dale and Trek.

Trek 1.5 = Full Sora w/Tiagra rear DR @ $950

Cdale CAAD9 6 = Full Tiagra @ $1050

Trek 2.1 = Tiagra w/105 rear DR @ $1150

I'm 6'0", 270lbs and in relatively good shape. I've averaged nearly 100miles/week on my 1.2 and think I'm capable of at least twice that once I get comfortable.

Based on what I've read I'm leaning toward the CAAD especially because the 2.1 is probably just out of my price range. Any input? I'm still very much a newbie and didn't know what any of this even meant 2 weeks ago.

I question buying another bike from a shop that sold you a bike that was too big for you.

I'm mostly to blame for buying the larger frame. I originally ordered a bike online from somewhere else and found out 2 weeks later that it was "lost in transit" so I went to the LBS after work that day determined to leave with a bike. They didn't have a 58 in stock and I didn't think the bigger frame would be an issue. So I left with the 60 and regretted it within a few days. It was my impatience and I'm pleased that they are willing to work with me despite that fact.

I would return to a shop that gives me full credit refund on a bike that was not right for me, but I would have the general manager or most qualified person fit me.

I usually find that bike shop employees are pretty clueless unless you move up the chain of command.

Agreed. The kid that fit me the first time didn't seem to be confident in what he was doing. He kept having to go to the back to ask questions to the other guys working on the bikes. Knowing what I know now, this would have thrown up red flags but I was clueless. The guy I talked to tonight is definitely more experienced and he was a manager. He couldn't believe that the first guy actually let me out the door with the 60cm. I think he also looked up my sales history and noticed that I've spent a solid $300 in "extras" in the last 2 weeks and decided it might be in his interest to keep me as a customer. lol

If it were me I would probably go with the Cannondale, primarily because the wheels are probably stronger (although you still might want to get something a little beefier down the road) and because it comes with 9 speed components (the Trek 1.5 has 8 speed).

From what I have heard, the Bontrager wheels on the Trek bikes are not great for heavier riders.

It's definitely hit or miss with LBS when you first start out, either you get a shop with the long-term customer in mind or just a quick sell. A LBS with personnel with a vested interest in your return are the best I find. That shop where the owner works the floor is looking for you to come in next year, the kid selling bikes for the summer could care less.

I found the same sort of problems with motorcycle shops/dealers.

The extra hundrd bucks is well worth it! You got off easy with the shop giving you the full trade, take advantage. Not only will the components work better, but usually the wheel quality goes up along with the components and model.

I'm 6'1 and felt great on a Trek 58. Friends that are 5'10 ride 56. Just a ballpark for you!

All bikes listed are mucho excellent. Were it me, I'd probably go the C-dale route, they've always had a pretty dang good reputation. Good frames, nice bikes overall.

At 270#, look for a bike with more tire clearance than a standard road bike--Trek Pilot series or the leat expensive Rivendell offering, for instance.

I'm 6' and ride a 58 Trek Pilot 2.1 which fits perfect, but I think the Pilot line is discontinued...

My LBS put me on a 61cm Trek 1.2. It was all they had in my price range and I was clueless. I'm 6'1 and my back and neck hurt every ride I do. 4-5 times a week.
