HRM vs Garmin
I did a search here and online and found some answers. I'm in the market for a HRM, that research lead me to consider a Garmin. I would like the 705 but it seems too spendy, the only advantage I see is the map directions.
Seems once I started lookng for features that I wanted the Garmin was only slightly more and seemed to offer more features.
Seems the 305 comes highly recommended. There is the forerunner and Edge. Forerunner (for running) and Edge (for biking). I do mostly biking, but would like to use it on the occasional run.
The Edge seems larger then the Forerunner can it be used on a run?
What's your thoughts on the HRM vs Garmin and Forerunner vs Edge?
I bought the Edge a couple weeks ago and absolutely love it. I'm using it exclusively on my bike though. It might be a little big to bring on a run. It would probably be like bringing your cell phone for a run. It might not be bad if you could find an armband case or something that would fit it, assuming it would still get satellite signal reception. I wouldn't want the Forerunner for my bike mostly because the display looks pretty small compared to the Edge. I can view up to 8 stats at the same time on the Edge but I choose to go with a few less so I can make the MPH and HR displays larger.
I have no experience with the ForeRunner: I have the Edge 305. Like it alot. I'd recommend it with a couple caveats:
First, it has a known problem with shutting off when riding on vibration-inducing roads. Garmin knows this although doesn't publicize it. I have had to return my 305 once a year for the past 2 years to get new ones. This last time (last month), the man on the phone said they had switched to a newer design and I shouldn't have trouble with it again. Here's hoping...
Second, you'll want to get a good software program to access it's features. I have found Ascent to be the best. (Downside? It's for Macintosh only.) Motionbased just doesn't do it for me, but others like it. The Garmin Training Center is only good for putting que's onto your maps (Ascent does not do this). I use bikely.com to map out the route and then import into GTC where I add the street names. The Edge does not show surrounding streets, just the ones that your route is on and you created.
Now, can you use the Edge on a run? Sure. Just tuck it into a pocket and away you go. One method I used to avoid the vibration-shut down was to put it into my back jersey pocket. Still worked like a charm.
I use my Edge mostly for a couple things:
- I track my HR when training, trying to stay in the right zones for that day;
- I watch my cadence, trying to keep it 90+;
- I like to see the graphs of the elevation profile of my rides (pure enjoyment);
- I customized my two main screens: one for racing and one for all other riding (training, rec rides, etc.);
- I track my mileage month-to-month and year-to-year; and last
- I use the map function when riding new routes to know where I'm going (you have to send the maps to the Edge prior to using them). This way, I don't have to use paper route slips that--especially on longer rides--get all soggy and torn up due to sweat.
I would like to get an Edge 705, too. But financially, it's not possible now. I'd get that strictly for the implementation of the power meter. The map-coverage would be a good bonus.
There is a phone armband made that is only a couple mm in each dimension different from the size of the edge. If I decide on the 305 its what Im going with (search on edge 305 and youll find my post in the technology forum). I need that visual capability for runs to see my current speed so I need the armband.
How fast do you run, that you monitor speed. If I looked while running I would probably just see a "yawn". If it had voice prompts that might be helpful.

If you like audio, consider an iPod Nano and the Nike + iPod system. Once configured it's pretty accurate (I was .3 miles off at the end of my 13.1 this fall), and pressing the center button on the iPod gives you an audio account of current pace, distance travelled (or remaining after the halfway point in a set distance workout), and total time. Plus it does it in a pleasing female voice which is always nice.
Im finding i grow tired of pressing the button and just want to visually be able to quick look at my progress. With an armband worn on the forearm its pretty easy to do so.
I have the Forerunner 305 and use it for 95% biking right now. I also have the speed/cadence sensor and it works great. I guess it just depends upon what you want. The HRM of the 305 is just as good as the Polar HRM that I had that finally failed.
I use my edge 305 running.. It is pretty compact and I just place in inside my waist pack with my mp3 player and cell phone.. You just can't read the display while running.. I like it because it gives me all the stats I want.. HR info, mileage and I can plot different routes and know the exact mileage..
The model is Case logic MPC7.. I put the edge 305 in the mesh pocket where the key is shown below.. It holds it firmly so it does not get tossed around while running..
