Both performance and Nashbar have them with padding for around $20. I think I like the performance ones better.

I've owned several pairs of padded undershorts... and always found them to be inferior to true lycra cycling shorts. These days, if I'm feeling a bit self-conscious I'll wear the bike shorts under a pair of workout or casual shorts. Or I'll use padded mountain bike shorts. Both alternatives seem to work better for me than undershorts. I find that the additional padding offered by a true bicycling short is necessary to keep me comfortable on longer rides...

Yeah, undershorts are junk. Get proper shorts, and then if you feel the need add http://rapha.cc/index.php?page=471 or something similar.

I understand the desire not to wear spandex, believe me, but you'll never go back.

thanks... tell me which one to get.

For cheaper shorts, I think the Sugoi is wonderful. At the upper end, I think the Assos F.I. Mille half short are pretty awesome, and they come up to XXXL, though they use funny names (XL, XLG, TIR instead of XL, XXL, XXXL). I've heard great things about Giordana, but haven't worn. The Assos is wonderful even after 70-100 miles, no complaints at all (though I ride with bibs instead of shorts on longer rides, it's the same chamois).

Someone will chime in with the appropriate Performance or Nashbar shorts for truly budget shorts, but I have no experience with them and am not comfortable guessing which is the right one.

I just got a pair of Pearl Izumi shorts at my LBS and so far they seem fairly nice. I have only done 7-8 mile rides in them but they helped a lot when compared to my first ride without them. I can't remember which style they are but they were about $50.

Just looked it up and I think I have the quest shorts just to let you know...

...Looking for cycle under shorts

I usually find that my bicycle does much better under* my shorts than above them. I find I move much faster with the wheels down then with them up:D

I've been very happy with my Pearl Izumi Slice shorts. They're currently on sale at Performance Bike for $70 (down from $95). I've tried several different brands of bicycle shorts and these are by far my favorite. Even on sale they're pricey, but I can ride 50-60 miles in them without a hint of discomfort... which I can't say about any of the other shorts I've tried. YMMV, of course.

i ended up getting the Pearl Izumi P.R.O. MICROSENSOR SHORT from a local bike shop. i went out tonight and what a difference.
thanks for all your help.
