Hung up my bike

with the start of the bow season. Gotta fill the freezer and hunting is one of the reasons I bike - to stay in shape.

Any hunters here?

My cousin who owns an auto wrecking yard, did that with his ramp truck, Dodge frame, Ford engine, Chevy body. The local cops call the game warden, game warden asks him if he wants "the body", so he ended up with a freezer full of venison...

If you going to end up spending $1000 to fix your car, getting the meat is at least a fair exchange....

Slice it thin, use a good seasoning, and you can make it in the oven at a low setting to dry the meat instead of cooking it.

OVEN DEER JERKY
Printed from COOKS.COM

Follow instructions for deer jerky with the following exceptions: Before you pat dry the jerky after rinsing, place it in a bowl and sprinkle 2 or 3 tablespoons liquid smoke over the meat, stir to coat. Pat dry with paper towels. Air dry for 1 hour and sprinkle seasonings on both sides. Place meat (in single layers) on racks in preheated slow oven (180 to 200 degrees). Meat will drip during cooking so place racks on cookie sheets covered with paper towels. Turn meat every two hours and alternate from lower to upper rack of oven. Cooking time will vary depending on temperature of oven and thickness of meat. Check for doneness as instructed in regular deer jerky recipe.

OVEN DRIED JERKY
Printed from COOKS.COM

1 1/2 -2 lbs. lean meat, round steak or venison
1/4 c. soy sauce
1 tbsp. Worcestershire sauce
1/4 tsp. (each) pepper and garlic powder
1/2 tsp. onion powder
1 tsp. hickory smoked flavored salt

Trim and discard all fat from meat. Cut the meat in 1/8 - 1/4 inch thick slices, with or across the grain. Make strips 1 1/2 inches wide and as long as desired.

Combine soy sauce, Worcestershire sauce, pepper, garlic powder, onion salt, hickory smoke salt in a bowl. Add meat strips and mix thoroughly. Coat all surfaces. Meat will absorb most of the liquid. Let stand overnight in refrigerator. Arrange strips in plastic bags (close together but not overlapping).

Put on oven racks or cake racks set in shallow baking pans. Dry meat at lowest temperature (150-200 degrees) until it has turned brown and is dry to touch, about 5 hours. Store in airtight plastic bags.

Hunting with a rifle seems very impersonal, especially when it's done from the air. Except perhaps when you are the Governor of Alaska and are taking a prank call:

***********
A: Well, I hope for you. You know, we have a lot in common because personally one of my favourite activities is to hunt, too.

Sarah Palin : Oh, very good. We should go hunting together.

A: Exactly, we could try go hunting by helicopter like you did. I never did that. Like we say in French, on pourrait tuer des bebe phoque s, aussi. ["We could go kill baby seals" - NB]

P: Well, I think we could have a lot of fun together while we're getting work done. We can kill two birds with one stone that way.

A: I just love killing those animals. Mmm, mmm, take away life, that is so fun. I'd really love to go, so long as we don't bring along Vice-President Cheney.

P: No, I'll be a careful shot, yes.

I wonder if she is related to Stephané Dion, both ran for office and made it way to easy for the opposition to make them look like a complete idiot. Neither got elected to the position they wanted.

Americans are easily manipulated by media - and media people are liberals. Not the whole truth, but big part of it.

And exactly how makes one TV channel up for Newsweek, Washington Post, NYT etc. etc. plus all other TV channels on top of it?

I worked for a long time with people from newspapers - and the overall impression was, they should have lived where I lived before 89. There was more socialists than in the college of Marxism Leninism in Prague

Often I find the media is more opportunistic then idealistic, one time they will brutally attack a conservative, the next election the same media people are attacking a liberal with the same abandon. What I find interesting though, is how voters can react to media stories. The media reported in the last Canadian election that the Conservatives would have a large majority, and that a majority win was a foregone conclusion. This lead to the lowest voter turnout in history, and the Conservatives ended up 6 seats short of a majority.

Let me explain what I mean by that, to the Americans who don't know how it works here, 18 parties were vying for election, 4 larger ones and 14 smaller ones, the 4 larger ones ended up with seats in Parliament. A majority is when the party with the most seats has more seats then all the others combined. A minority is when the party with the most seats has less then all the other parties combined. With a majority you can pretty much pass anything you want. With a minority you need to make sure you offer enough concessions to the opposition to keep them from out voting you. Certain things are called confidence motions, budget is one of them, if the government loses a confidence motion, it means that there is no longer confidence that the government can govern. The Prime Minister, the leader of the government, goes to Rideau Hall, and informs the Governour General, who dissolves Parliament and an election is called. Sometimes after an election a party that does particularly poorly (like the Liberals in the last election, had their worst showing in history, with Mr Dion as leader). the leader of the party will resign. It often takes a party time to select a new leader, and get that leader established (typically a year or more), during which time they do not want another election, so they will often side with the governing party, and keep a minority going. It's rare for a minority government to last less then a year, most don't last more then 2 years, although the last one lasted 3.

As Wog pointed out, the US media are opportunistic rather than liberal. Note the feeding frenzy around Clinton's impeachment, for instance.

Fox News' coverage of the election on Tuesday night was very right-wing. I found it odd, for instance, that they didn't mention the negative response to Sarah Palin that many voters, including me, cited as a reason to not vote for McCain.

To bring this back to the topic of the thread, the election results can be read as a landslide dismissal of hunting from the air.

Both my wife and I are avid hunters, fishermen, and general outdoor nuts… we enjoy Deer hunting with archery equipment in particular though. Indiana’s early archery season for Deer started Oct.1, so we have been hunting for over a month now. My wife took her first ever Deer with a Bow second week of this season, she is quite happy with it… he weighed in field dressed at 180 lbs, and is being scored as a 9 point because of some kickers on the antler bases. A couple of people have estimated the antler’s in the 135 range… so we are going to wait the required time and have them officially measured. 135 is right at the lower limit for entry into the Pope & Young record book. Even if the Deer doesn’t make P&Y, my wife is absolutely thrilled, and we are having the head done by a taxidermist. Our freezer is full, and he is a Deer of great taste...
