Do you Ride with a Nagging Cough?

OK flew home arrived late - but readyto go for my weekend trip in Claxton. Plan was to go down there do a ride Fri, a 100 Saturday and then return Sunday. Woke up with a long yucky cough...and decided not to go (gave away the hotel room - and decision is made...) as I do not need to push myself to get Pneumonia or something... But did I just wuss out?

ANyway now I am sad without a plan for the weekend. May try and do a ride tomorrow near home - but seriously - I travel a ton for work (on a plane 2x per week) and my rpiority is o be happy :Jump: Stay healthy (or get healthy) and then ride....

Any one can share theier experience. Does riding hurt or help if you have just staretd with a yucky cough??

Advice #1: Don't take health advice from the internet.

*I* ride with chest congestion, but would never ride with a fever.

Depending on the weather I might have done it. I find that exercise kinda clears me out. If the weather was going to be rainy or cold though I'd probably take the opportunity to rest and see if I could hot-chocolate my way to health.

That depends if I am getting better or worse

HI,
Many times I will have a nagging cough mostly from Nasal Drip down the throat (#1) cause of Post nasal drip coughing.
If its in the lungs, I would be sure I am getting better, no fever and then ride to bring up the congestion. I ve noticed that I will have coughing fits after getting over Pneumonia when I first start exercising and they will gradually ease off after a week or two.

It depends on the cough.....

If a Bronchitis cough, that can create scarring in the bronchial tubes and develop into pneumonia as well. Probably better to rest, hydrate and get better.

HEEEEEEL YEAH! I rode about a month ago the day after oral surgery. Still had stitches in mouth! My hobbies are for fun, I play no matter!

I've been on the bike with coughs, fever, flu, day after a migraine headeache (even with but not by choice!), the runs, you name it! I wanna play!

If I do have acough, I'll only ride 40'ish miles. Usually feel better and the coughing stop s while on the bike. Sometimes I hate to get off!

Do not take Beanz's advice. He is superhuman and doesn't understand our frailties.

I once went riding when I thought I had recovered from a cough. I felt fine until I hit the one mile mark where there was a slight upward slope (not even a hill) and I felt like a horse was sitting on my chest. I turned around and rolled back down and went home.

Yes. I have found that laying around in your own filth is worse than getting some fresh air. Go and ride!

OK y'alll - NO definitive answer - saw the doctor. He says if it's nice out - 70s go for it! But I think a lesser ride would be in order. I may see some friends who get together on Saturday mornings whom I have not seen in months since I staretd riding. Might be fun to shock them all with my new body... Or on the other hand like Mr Beanz says Iit's awesome to go ride..so we shall see. It's hard when ya travel EVERY week. Nothing worse than being sick away form home - so I will weigh resting up vs sweating it out vs a fun day of riding. there's a group ride I can join that sounds great!!!

The last time I rode with a nagging cough I started coughing up blood while I was riding and ended up with bad case of bronchitis. It took me two weeks to get over it.

There is a reason why being sick makes you feel like a , it's the bodies way of telling you that you need to let it rest to fight off the infection. So make a nice cup of tea, add some lemon and honey
(some people prefer a nice brandy), then go into hibernation mode. Often if you invest a day or two to get better, you recover much quicker, then if you try to be superman (or superwoman), and the stupid illness hangs on for weeks.

I've known people who firmly believe that if they don't go to work every day, the universe will end, A month later they are still driving everyone nuts with their honking and barking.

BTW These are the same people who will walk the 40 miles to work after a blizzard drops a half a metre of snow on the ground, while everyone else takes the day off to let the nice folks at the local snow camp to take their graders and plows and front end loaders to nicely move it out of the way.

Start slow. If the cough gets worse, you struggle to breath or you get light headed turn around and limp home.
No harm done. You've asked your body the question and it has said "Take a rest."

If it hinders your breathing, don't ride. If there's a fever, don't ride. Otherwise, ride with care.

“Poll: Do you ride with a nagging cough?” No, I generally ride with my wife, and thankfully she doesn’t nag, or cough… Haha…ha….…..HA…sorry. But, seriously I would consult your Doctor about your cough, and see what he/she thinks… Nagging coughs can be caused by many different things, and thusly treated in many different ways.

My personal experience is, that I get bronchitis every three to five years, and if I go out riding while I’m still coughing, it feels great at the time. I get air flowing, stuff moving in my lungs, and breath so much easier… that is until I stop riding and cool down, and then there is hell to pay, my chest will tighten up, and I spend the evening on the couch wheezing, and end up taking more medication to calm it down then I would have normally.

So I have learned to go see my Doctor, get the proper treatment for my condition, and as much as it pains me…take it easy until I’m breathing better. With some of the inhalers they have now, you can get a nagging cough under control in less than a week.

Anyway best of luck to you… hope you get to feeling better.
