Well I picked up my new shoes and clipless pedals today and cut out of work a little early so I could try them out before it got dark.

I got a pair of Scott Pro Road shoes and Speedplay Light Action pedals. I got in and out of them pretty easy on the trainer when they were making sure they were dialed in. I even got in and out of them several times during the ride, but when you forget you are wearing them it is hard to get out of them.

I was on a local MUP and saw a guy I knew and hadn't talked to in a while. I was so excited to see him that I forgot I had my new pedals on and over I went. It wasn't too bad, just a little blood on the knee.

The guy I ran into said he fell over in front of sorority girls, so I guess this was preferable.

I really enjoyed the ride with the shoes though. Much better than the sketchers I was wearing. I am looking forward to a longer ride to really test the out.

Cool story. I'm looking forward to swallowing my fear and installing my clipless pedals and shoes in the spring (but I've said this for a couple of seasons now, so...)

I hope it's a long while to another fall, and hopefully you'll find a nice pile of feathers to fall on!

My fall was alone on a corner, when I completely couldn't get unclipped. Then I fell and both shoes came un-clipped. What a maroon, what a maroon!!!!!

Good luck with the new shoes and clips. It made things better for me.

My wife managed to unclip the wrong foot (leaning the other way!) and end up flat on her side at a red light - beside a convertible full of young college guys. They were very nice about it and helped her up!

You do it only once, then you are fine!

Ah welcome to the club! I fell for the first time with my clipless shoes at the bike store. They told me how to clip my feet in and off i went. Then as I was riding toward the shop the sales guy was yelling at me. I stop and say WHAT! Well... over I went! He told me, "I forgot to tell you how to clip out!" OOPs! Then On my first rides... I fell a bunch.


Make sure you always clip out on the same side and lean to the opposite side. Also I had to tell myself- hey stopping clip out. The other thing was to nto take off too fast. Always remember to have one foot clipped in before I try and start up....

My first time out on clipless, I did my usual 2 hour ride with lots of big hills, got home, pulled into the driveway, started frantically trying to pull my shoes out of the (non-existent) clips, and came to a stop leaning sideways against my garage door, still clipped in.

It happens, nothing to be worried about.

So far I have been fortunate enough not to experience the fall. I came close once but thankfully I had my tension set low enough I was able to rip my foot out before going completely over. Course I say type this now and tomorrow I will have to start a thread

It eventually happens to everyone at one time or another. I affection ally call it the "Stop and Flop".

Murphy dictates that it happen at least once in a most embarrassing manner.

This is why I'm still to scared to use clipless pedals. I hate skinned knees and elbows.

note to Cyclokitty... I can't imagine riding without the clipless now. I feel like I am going to fly off the bike without them

I wouldn't shun clipless for this reason, especially when you consider that the most common clipless fall is at 0mph. The road rash would be relativly minor if any at all. That could be a good thing about trying clipless this time of year, you'll probably have on long sleeves and pants.

It happens to us all, and it always seems like it is at the worst possible time. You will be fine with them though. Welcome to the club.

Speedplays have alot of float and as a result you have to twist your foot pretty far to unclip . . . I think this can make it easier to fall over without unclipping in time. I prefer the Look style pedals with 4-6 degrees of float.

Trash can "Ta-Da" was by our companion, mine was closer to that park with the bathroom right at the entrance. Can't think of the name of the park and too lazy at the moment to use my Google-Fu.

I went over recently on the side of a busy road at a stop sign. I was pretty fatigued and just couldn't get my foot out. It happens to all of us.

I've been using clipless for all of 25 miles, and so far so good. Yeah, I can tell it's going to happen at some point though. lol

Normal.. Practice makes perfect. It will take about a week before it's totally natural.. During that first week, practice in non traffic areas.
