    Just saying hi

I have been a lurker for about 6 months here. Just reading the forum in general. I have been riding for a about 2 weeks and I am addicted. My main reason for getting a bike is to help get my strength back in my legs and it is just a good exercise.

I have read that a mountain bike is a good bike for heavy people. I weight 300lbs right now. And I read that the Specialized hardrock is a good starter bike.
I went to the LBS and tried it out I liked it. When to another LBS and they had a GT 2009 Outpost Disc. I liked this one better and it was within my budget. So am a proud owner of a GT 2009 Outpost Disc.

This bike is going to be used for my recovery and for fun. I did not know how much I would like riding but I love it.

    I got a question.
I am a xxxl in t-shirts. What size would I be in a jersey? And what is a site to get one at? The LBS don't have a big selection and not for my size.

Welcome Sharky! Nice choice on the ride.

Clothing sizes are a bane of the Clyde and Athena community. I think it starts around size XL with strange ideas of sizing. Some manufacturers seem to think that an XL cyclist weighs 180 lbs

One thing to look for is if the jerseys are club cut and not race cut. Race cut is very tapered and club cut is more relaxed. For jerseys, there are a lot of alternatives available at Walmart and places like Academy Sports that won't break the bank. If you have a Performance Bike in your area they run sales all the time. I have trouble finding my size in sale items in the store but you can try stuff on and order it and have it shipped to your house Orr to the store. REI is another good alternative.

I would concentrate on shorts at first if you are working with a budget. Heck, I ride with a t-shirt if it's not extremely hot, and you can ride with a $10 Walmart compression/wicking under shirt with them. There are also mountain biking/commuter shorts that have the lycra sewn in as a liner and the outer short looks like cargo shorts if you don't want to wear just the lycra. The shorts are almost a life saving device for comfort and chafing, but there are folks who don't use them.

There are a ton of threads on clothing sources. up in the right hand corner of the sub-forum home page there is a "seach this forum" link. Click and type in clothing sizes or options, or something of the sort, and you will get a ton of links to previous threads with sources and manufacturers.

    Welcome to the herd!

Performance and Nashbar have inexpensive jerseys, and a good return policy. Get club cut instead of race cut. Sizing is all over the map with Performance and Nashbar, so it's hard to make specific recommendations.

I second the suggestion of getting shorts first. Bib shorts, the ones that have shoulder straps, seem to be preferred among the herd. I like that they keep stuff in place and act as a 'control top' for the loose skin on my belly. (OK, it's not ALL loose skin, folks. I guy can dream, can't he?) Again Performance and Nashbar come to mind as sources. Aerotech Designs is a mail-order company that some folks here like, but I've never used them.

Oh, and welcome. If you live anywhere near Philadelphia, PA, PM me. We could meet up for a ride.

Just got a short sleeve and long sleeve jersey from Aerotech designs. I've very pleased with them and the price was very cheap (the $34 one not the $54 one) compared to other true cycling jerseys. they also carry up to 6X for some jerseys. What i would suggest is to measure your chest because as was noted, the sizing is all across the board. As for shorts, i went to my LBS and bought a good Pearl short (XXL) which fit nice. Aerotech has a Big Man section with shorts but i haven't bought online as i'm a bit apprehensive when it comes to south of the border. good luck and welcome to the two wheeled world.

+1000 on the Aerotech. Frankly, you'll be lucky to find even a 2X at any stores, including REI ("we have them online!").

Welcome sharkchild. I have to agree about the jersey call txvintage made. I am XXXL as well (closer to XXL now though). I got a number of jerseys when I first started riding and none of them really fit or felt right.

I'd go with a good wicking t-shirt as txvintage mentioned. You can find them at any department store or if they don't carry your size, try a Big & Tall store.

For shorts, I'd suggest www.aerotechdesigns.com for larger sized cycling wear. Performance might have cheaper, but you get what you pay for. Once a friend had shorts from Performance and was needing a new pair. He felt mine and said he'd never buy from Performance again. They are good for many things, but I've never been that impressed with their clothes.

I like the pic by the gate. It's like it wants out to run the road, lol.

It's red, so it's fast. It's a rule ya know.
