OT But interesting - Clydes helping a skinny guy bike to DC

A fellow Bike Forums poster is riding from Phoenix, AZ to DC for the Presidential swearing-in next month. While he's not a Clydesdale, a number of Clydes are helping him, and in at least one case planning on meeting him.

    FlyinRyan

Ryan, the young rider in question, didn't make a good impression on many folks in the Touring Forum at first. Between his political views, which give new meaning to the phrase "on the left", and some of the approaches he took to planning the ride, he alienated a few folks. But the road and the essential goodness of humanity seems to have mellowed him. I've spoken twice with him on the road, and posted updates to a thread in the Touring forum.

Do any Clydes and Athenas want to ride with him at some point in his trip? We can show him we have big hearts as well as big bodies.

Ryan left El Paso, TX, this morning, and he's planning on reaching Austin by this weekend.

I wasn't planning on going because I was going to take winter intersession classes. Now that I'm not, and my spring semester doesn't start till the 26th, I might consider riding down there. I probably won't be of much help to Ryan if I do, not knowing anyone there really but I might be able to meet him.

The Clydes helping on his ride are 10 Wheels, TXvintage, The Historian, and, I think, Neilfein.

He won't be coming through DFW. The closest he is going to get is around Austin. I'm hoping to drive down and meet him around Fredricksburg on Friday with some food stuff and few colder weather riding items. What the heck, what's 8 hours in a car to spend a few minutes with a cyclist on a mission.

He pulled out of El Paso this morning a little later than he planned but he's making good time after a rough start. While we certainly are on polar oppsite ends of political views, I admire his gumption. Not many people would decide to ride across the country in the middle of winter of with no touring experience what so ever. His planning was ill conceived, his equipment was non existant, his funds were few, and he had no idea of the magnitude of the task in front of him. What better than to go for it. Damn the torpedos, full steam ahead.

At the end of the day, he is a cyclist who is young, idealistic, and apparently somewhat fearless. All admirable qualities. Yes, he has some brashness that often accompanies being young and idealistic, and it comes across poorly in type sometimes. He seems an entirely different and charming young man when you speak with him. I hope he makes it and has an amazing time doing so.

Do we have any Austin residents on the forum? I may need a small assist in delivering my care package this weekend.

    Quick update:

Ryan is in Sonora, TX and about 200 miles from Austin. He hopes to arrive in Austin sometome Saturday and take Sunday as a rest day. He has a place to stay in Huntsville with a BF'er and hopes to spend Chritmas in Houston.

Care package is headed to Austin tomorrow thanks to one of the North Texas BF'ers that is a part of the group we have trying to start up a Dallas area Bike Co-Op.

So far weather has been good to him and he hasn't had the cold and mild icey conditions we have had in N. Texas.

Text message from Ryan with his schedule for the rest of the trip. He's now riding with another Bike Forums poster, Joshua1234. Josh took off on the spur of the moment to ride across the US. Oh to be young and free......

Does anyone here want to ride with them, or host them?

To some people it maybe a "dumb cause", but at least he has a cause. So many young people are apathetic an have no cause at all. I say good on him!
