My Neck of the Woods- Part 3 "A Trip to Iowa on The Bob" (pics)

To start the new year with something scenic (or at least quirky) I decided to start in downtown Omaha and cross the Missouri River on the new $20 million Bob Kerrey Pedestrian Bridge. This puts you in the very working class town of Council Bluffs, Iowa with about a 12 mile ride on their MUP to the trailhead for the Wabash Trace Trail, which goes down to Missouri. The Council Bluffs MUP is kind of interesting, passing by a municipal golf course where the clubhouse has become a "biker bar" of sorts. Then the MUP passes through the parking garage of Harrah's Casino, on down by another casino, along an industrial road, through a small wooded area, by a big kids' sports complex, and then passes briefly through a trailer court before coming back out along a creekbank levy. Down the levy a couple miles south a bridge takes you into Lake Manawa State Park... and a nice woodsey four or five miles is left to the Wabash trailhead. In these woods I had to turn back due to icy conditions, but I filled out the ride with some exploratory time on the CB MUP that I had not seem before.

You have a keen eye for fine bicyclery my friend! The BA rides like butter and reminds me in appearance of a certain Chambery I have seen in these pages. (I was so comfy on it yesterday I had to remind myself to change hand positions!) I did make some changes from it's original state (see pic) to make it my own, so to speak.

It was in the high 30s mostly so it wasn't bad at all. Pretty comfortable actually considering the lack of wind! Thanks for viewing.

Nice pics! You are correct, the CB trail system is the epitamy of "interesting" I've found . My in-laws live there, over by the Mall of the Bluffs, which is kind of nice because their home is about a mile from the Wabash Trace trail head. It's an absolutely gorgeous trail, I'd highly recommend getting lost on it for a day or so. It's dirt/gravel, but I've ridden it on slicks and have been fine, so I'd imagine you'd enjoy it on the BA as well.

    Combination of factors:
    1. Gray skies seem to keep people inside around here for some reason...I love the gloom myself.
    2. CB Iowa is a very "working class" town and tends to have fewer outdoor active type of persons- more hunters than bikers I would guess.
    3. It was New Year's Day and both Iowa and Nebraska wee playing football on TV during my ride.

It was even almost deserted up on the bridge yesterday... whereas it is usually a clusterf... err, quite crowded up there!

Thanks bdinger. I'll bet there isn't another MUP that goes under a casino hotel via its parking garage! I haven't ridden the Wabash lately but am going to do the Taco Ride on my Schwinn at least a couple times this year. Have you ridden from the Wabash trailhead over the Kerrey bridge yet?
