GT Avalanche 3.0 Disc. Opinions?

Been looking around for a mountian bike for some trail riding and winter commuting. I found a GT Avalanche 3.0 disc at a lbs for $500. Decent deal? Any one know anything about the bike?

GT has good quality and that's pretty basic, entry-level MTB. As for price, Performance has the 2008 on their site for $399.
