Today ride pics and Gina's Poker Face!

We did 51 miles out on the trail today. We ran into a few forum members at the start of our ride which was the end of their 25 miler. We headed north with plans to return south for an out and back. Little did we know that 2 of the others would follow us as we headed north. Gina and I hit our turnaround then headed back. We were about 16 miles into the ride when we ran across the other two that had followed behind. There were 10 miles left to the end of their ride so we headed off together.

The guy in the green is a strong rider according to the others but I've never rode with him. I have with the guy in the red that logged 17,000 miles on bikejournal in 2008!..not married, that 'splains it!

So the guy in the green immediately jumps up front and picks up the pace to 21 mph. I'm comfy but I'm thinking Gina will tire after a couple of miles so I plan to fallback when she needs. We're doing a pretty good clip but I decide to get a pic while we're together. Gina's hair is blowing in the wind from the speed the guy has set. So he pulls for a couple of miles then pulls to the side and waves me up front. I'm not surea bout Gina but I go up front and hold the same pace. After a couple of miles I'm feeling the wind but seem to relax and hold the pace steady and consistent. I know I'm feeling it but call out other riders as they approach from the opposite direction. "Rider up" I shout then Gina repeats my words to warn others behind that may not see the approaching riders. I'm really shocked as she calls out in a relaxed calm voice. WTF! I'm pushing hard and she's calm!

So I continue the pull for another couple and by this time I find a way to relax and I'm feeling good. I still push the pace and know Gina must be hurting somewhat. Again I call out and again she repeats in a very calm shout! 4 or 5 more times of the same and I'm wondering what the heck is going on, how can she remain so calm and relaxed at a high pace into a headwind?

SO with a couple miles left the guy in the green comes up again and says, "let me help". He takes the lead again so the pace continues at 21 mph. Gina is still on my wheel and knowing the pace won't drop anytime soon, I expect her to say "uncle" but she doesn't.

Then the guy in the red takes the lead and I think, "oh great, must be discouraging for Gina". So then we hit the end of their ride and they drop off. We just rolled at 21 mph for 10 miles and she's fine! We get down the road so I have to ask, "what the heck happened, how did you call out so calmly when I know we were moving that fast? Then I told her I was expecting her to be winded, huffing and puffing and calling "uncle"!

So she says she was hurting and huffing and puffing but that she didn't want them to know she was hurting. She says everytime she called out she'd take a deep breath and hold it for the callout so that it would seem that she wasn't huffing and puffing. Ol' pokerface is learning the tricks!

Good on ya, Gina!!

Guy in red looks familiar, but I think it's just 'cause I've seen so many peeps and now I'm getting them confused. Ya'all look the same to me

Were you guys over-dressed? On Montrose Saturday, I only had arm-warmers and wind vest. (Cold after-ward going downhill, though--due to sweat.)

That would be cool to have a trail like that to ride around here. I have all low traffic roads, but it seems like the occasional semis have a hard time paying attention!

Yup, it's a nice tail and no semis!.....We can ride around home but why when we have tha trail within reach. I do worry about Gina's traffic skills at times, including behind the wheel! Better safe than sorry!

The dude in red is either Keith or Tortoise on the SoCal bikejournal club. He had 17,000 miles so you prolly saw his name everytime you logged your miles! He's done a couple of forum rides and a regular partner of Ralph1955.

It was cool at the start and warm and warm when we stopped. Then cool again but by the end of the ride I had to shed one layer. Gina is always cold so she was fine.
