Changing tires on Trek 7100 and Weight Capacity
 

I would like to change my tires on my 09 Trek 7100 to something that is a little faster. I am thinking about going with Race Lite 700x28's. I am about 310 pounds. Will the tires/tubes handle my weight?

I would go 32 instead just to be safe,air up to the max is a must.

I don't know what tires to recommend, but I suggest that you get tires rated at 100 psi and inflate them to 140 psi. This is to (1) protect your rims, (2) prevent pinch flats, and (3) decrease rolling resistance, which helps you go faster. A pinch flat is when you hit something on the road and the top surface of the tire pinches the tube against the rim, creating two adjacent holes in a snake-bite pattern.

140 psi! What kind of pump do you have? I agree that you need to pump up the tires to prevent pinch flats. I usually keep mine at 110 and I weigh 278.

I have a Joe Blow and a Specialized. Both are floor pumps. One is in my bike shop which is in the basement of my house. The other is in my car.

I keep my rear tire at about 105, but I only weigh 190. I'm a visitor to this section of the board.

Tell you what. I'll try 140 and report how it feels. I hope someone else does, too. I think 140 should be easy with one of my pumps.

I was 345 and riding 23's, 28's will be fine. I have 28's on my Trek 7300 and they run great and I ride them at 105. I run 25's on my Caad9 now at 115.

i have 700x25s on my Sequoia Elite and run between 130 and 140 and weigh in @ 335

Thanks for all of the advice. I ended up going with Race Lite 700X32's. The ride was pretty smooth on the trail today.

The Brontrager Race Like Hard case are a very nice tire. I got those to replace my Invert Select tires that came stock on the bike. I didn't care for the invert select. I realy like the nice smooth ride the 32 mm tires give me. At 80 PSI they roll very nice and smoothly. The invert selects were 35mm. I don't remember being realy all that much faster when I switched, but certainly the ride became super smooth. I could have gone narrower, but the 32mm has pretty low rolling resistance and provides a great ride. I have the 25mm version of this tire on my road bike and like it on there as well.
