    2 more to go...

.....and I won't be a Clyde no more.

I quit smoking two years ago and up until then I maintained my weight around 185. For a 6'1" guy, I must say I had a nice figure. But I wasn't healthy, and broke from the $3k+ a year I was spending on nails for my coffin. Then it happened, food tasted so freek'n good! And the scales started telling me, 190, 200, 210, 220, 230.... And it was ALL around my mid section. Good God, I looked like a beer barrel with 4 sticks coming out of it. That's when I decided to get back in biking. Jogging wasn't an option. Mostly because.... well.....jogging sux!

I will more than likely drop to 199 in the next couple of days, and when I do, I have a question. Once I'm not fat any more, is it ok to point and make fun of all the other fat folks?

If you must. Just remember, some of us can ride/run pretty fast. It may not be pretty when you get caught...

I just got a mental picture of being dog piled.

Maybe if I had some cheese burgers and or doughnuts to distract them while I make my get-a-way......no that won't work. I'll end up eating the burgers and doughnuts myself.

Of course I'm not serious. However, I do believe we should be able to poke fun at ourselves. Life would be a lot harder without a sense of humor.

Now, I wish losing my weight was as easy as losing my hair.

You are a fairly new member here, so I'll fill you in a little bit. We have a saying here, "Once a Clyde, always a Clyde", so you will always be welcome in this forum. As far as making fun of yourself, that is cool, even encouraged, but making fun of someone because they are something that you once were, is not so encouraged. Some people here are pretty sensitive about their weight and rubbing their face in it, even though you mean it as a joke, it still hurts. It not a matter of being PC, but a matter of remembering where you have been, and helping others with your experience. You have a great story to tell, so why not inspire other people with it.

My intentions are not to make fun of others. I'm poking fun at the inappropriateness of "making fun of others". I think the first responder might have gotten it, and made a joke of the consequences of said actions.

You’re probably right. I have a thick skin, and I have a habit of testing others to see if they can take as much as I can. This is thin ice I will not tread on anymore.

The other problem with teasing like that, here anyway, is that this is a written medium. There's no body language to go along with it, so folks are quite unable to determine if you are teasing or being serious.

Some sort of pithy irrelevant one-liner should go here.

Just thought I would let the Sensitivity Police (who think I really want to make fun of fat folks) I've developed a new addiction to Cheddar Jalapeno Cheetos. If you like Jalapenos, I don't recommend you try them. You WILL get hooked!

So, I'm a little behind schedule to hit 199lbs. I guess you guys get the last laugh.

Omni, If I came off as the "Sensitivity Police", that was not my intent. I just wanted you to know that people can be a little sensitive around here about their weight and sometimes something meant as a joke gets misinterpreted. The other things is you are new here and we really did not know how to take you yet. Now, that you have explained about yourself a little, I know to take what you say with a grain of salt and let it go at that. If you hang around here and read some of our post, you'll get to know us a little better. Believe it or not we have a sense humor around, so stick around.

Just for the record, I am one Clyde who was not offended by his comments. After reading his post, I was sure he was joking. Nobody I know would be that blatant (or stupid) and EasyEd's response was a good one. Congratulations on getting the weight down. 200 is my goal too, however, I have quite a way to go.

Look, I understand the making fun of yourself is perfectly okay but to come with a comment like
Once I'm not fat any more, is it ok to point and make fun of all the other fat folks?
This is just a targeted statement not thought through completely on a forum such as this.

We all have different levels of where we are at our weight loss. Believe me I can poke fun at myself and most of the time do it keeps me inspired to keep pushing. What is not okay is the fact of someone else poking fun at others or me to an extent. I can take it. I've had thick skin for years. That is what being a police officer will do for ya but there is a limit and there is a lot of people who are not just sensitive but don't want it thrown in their face that they have a weight problem. If they are on here that means they are doing their damnedest to try and make that change. Poking fun at their problem is not a step in the right direction. This is just a general comment not pointing fingers.

Last thing I will say is this. I have been to my local bike shop and talk to all the cyclist there and most are about 200 lighter than me. I come off as a really nice guy but I know I can be intimidating if I want to be. I may be made fun of because of my weight but guess what it ain't in my face. Know why. Most people that poke fun like that are actually cowards at heart. The fact that most of these type of people could not stand a chance if I really got pissed off, and I don't get pissed off.

I am clyde through and through and will probably be one the rest of my life. Being a former Powerlifter and football player hell my lean mass is 258 so picking on a clyde is not the smartest thing for any cyclist who is under 200lbs.

Thanks Nighteyez, and yes, Ed's reponse was great!

I'm sure you will hit your goal. For me, I'm not going to force myself. My mind set is to just let it happen in its own time. I've dropped 20 lbs in three months just by eating smaller portions. I dropped 10 in less than a month just from biking. I have a feeling I lost more "fat" than that, but the weight loss is offset by gaining muscle.

I'm on the way to becoming a Clyde for the first time. I'm gaining about 5 pounds a year and up to about 188 now. Will you welcome me?

Seriously, I like this section, and I don't even know why. Well, one reason is that I like to talk about the challenges of keeping a bike in good repair with the extra work a bike has to do, supporting a heavy rider. I was a bike mechanic when I was young.

Also, I like reading about people setting challenges for themselves and working towards their goals. I cheer them on here. Or rather, I'm cheering you all on.

And I'm thinking I ought to work on losing some weight. I'm not a big guy, and I shouldn't weigh this much. Some of my recent gains are in muscle, but not all of them. So I'm learning from you all.

I have the impression you didn't get the meaning of the joke either. I'll reiterate. It was humor about the inappropriateness of making fun of people with a weight problem. I believe EasyEd understood, and that’s why his response about the consequences of doing such was perfect.

As Hill Pumper said, people with weight issues can be very sensitive, so I will keep my humor restricted to other sections of this forum.

Oh yea, I hope you weren't posting your pics in an effort to intimidate me. It doesn't work. Even though I may be over 200 myself, there is something I've learned about the "smaller" guys. They have ways to mess you up without the use of biceps.

No I don't have to do that. Just to show I am cylde. I don't internet bully. It ain't worth my time, and I did understand what you were saying. I was just putting my opinions. Maybe I should have just sat this one out.

LOL, and biceps have nothing to do with it.

And for the record this is the best way to go. Especially in riding a bike.
