Big Guy wheel advice...

Ok, I know these have been around now and again, but here's what I'm looking for.

I need cross bike wheels that I dont need to be truing every few days. I need to do this on a seriously tight budget. I spent $250 on the bike, I'm looking to spend 100 or less on the wheels.

Is this even doable?

Out fishing with Annie on his lap, a cigar in one hand and a ginger ale in the other, watching the sunset.

Not gonna be $100, but the Velocity Deep V Really can't be beat. I'm 2 years into my current wheels now and they are still true, after the retension, but they were hand built by a master wheelbuilder. I am NOT easy on the wheels, either, doing 40+ MPH descents on Indiana's rough roads.

Maybe ONE rear wheel (wich is the most important for a clyde), but even then, probably not under $100

Let us know if you do find them.

What hub spacing does the bike have? Brake type? I am on CL a bit lately and will keep an eye out if I know what you need.

How about something billed more as a 29er wheel than a cross wheel? Rims will be a little wider, but you're probably running wide-ish tires anyway, so it won't change the contact patch too much. Mountain wheels will typically be much more overbuilt than road wheels.

Here's a set of 29er-ish wheels that are double-walled, 36-spoke and accept rim brakes...

Not quite as cheap as you are asking, but the closest I could find.

ong - read my mind, those were the set I was thinking about depending on spacing. I'm thinking about getting a set for my Cypress.

Those look nice, and they have a lot of the "words" in them I would expect for the kinds of wheels I want. Unfortunately, because of my budget, it's just not feasible to buy wheels like that right now. But maybe I can find a sale.

Vuelta wheels are a good deal. I have a set of the Vuelta XRP PRO wheels I bought late last season. Not the same wheels and the "Tourist" wheels in the link but so far mine are still true and round. The rims are really stiff and take rough roads well. So far I have no broken spokes or other problems after nearly 1000 road miles. I weigh 225 as of this week and I climb on these wheels (spinning) fairly often.

Be warned, tall cross section wheels DO have a cross-wind issue. The wind WILL push you around and you WILL feel it in the steering.

Techknow, check out this listing on our local craigslist. I don't know anything about these wheels but they look like high spoke count and would probably be a lot better than what came on your bike. Might be worth checking into:
