Nothing for me to be sad about today. I ended up with some progress. Kind of a surprise since I really didn't plan the ride, but don't know how often/able I would be to duplicate it. 25.25 miles in about 2 1/2 hrs (28.27 miles total for today) for one ride. I'll have to think on some lessons learned (and may be asking questions), but evidently something lined into place today.

or....go race and see how you stack up, it can be fun and will give you new goals. some healthy competition never hurt anyone.

(i suggest XC...they yell less and you can't get dropped)

I ride for me. It makes me feel good and I enjoy it very much. It's helped me get fitter and basically that's all that matters. I go out to enjoy myself. Yes I keep a record of rides and I'd like to get faster at some point but as long as I come back with a smile on my face (and I do after each ride) it was a good ride.

I am really thinking about our local road race in July for that reason. However, I can't decide if it is just waste of good money to pay to ride around by myself for an hour and a half.

As out of shape as I get, there is someone even less in shape or doesn't ride at all. Never be discouraged. If you are getting out on a bike that is better than most. Cycling is an individual sport - the one that matters is you!

I "wasted" my best, youngest years by not keeping track of my distances or times. By the time the internet came along to tell me I had to, I figured it was too late to start :-)

Until usenet and internet forums, I also never knew that it was compulsory to achieve certain numeric goals. My average times would be useless to know anyway, because I vary my speed and intensity a lot within the same ride, plus I have to climb every hill I see, which really slows me down.

It's all those Cat racers on the Roadie forum, and most of them exaggerate too.

You go one of two ways, you either feel encouraged to try to do better, or discouraged that others are so much better then you are. Remember though, cyclists can be like fishermen, tall tales are a distinct possibility....
