Clyde on a mountain

Gentlemen and ladies,

I am a 59 year old clyde living on top of a 200 meter mountain in northern Taiwan. It is pretty steep. I have been walking up and down this hill for 6 years and finally 2 weeks ago I bought a Giant Yukon with disc brakes.

I have only one route on and off this hill: straight down to the ocean and straight back up. I still have to get off 2/3s up and walk it a bit, but then I get back on. So far I find that my best strategy for making it to the top is tacking back and forth across the steeper parts (luckily very few cars).

Any suggestions on conditioning for forced hill climbing for a guy like me coming back to the machine after 25 years of recreational walking? I have a dream of someday riding over the big mountains (1000 meters) into Taipei.

Hey, thanks for these fantastic forums. They are an inspiration for me.

Bill

Today I made it all the way back up the mountain without dismounting. First time. I adjusted the seat post up about 1/4 inch. I think that delivered a little more power.

It's only a 40 minute ride, but the last 30 of those minutes are a pretty steep climb.

I have been on the bike 12 days now. I already feel I have accomplished alot. Greatest accomplishment: I no longer fear the climb.

Out fishing with Annie on his lap, a cigar in one hand and a ginger ale in the other, watching the sunset.

Excellent! Victory tastes sweet, does it not?

You bet it does!

My eyes are on the mountain behind this hill called Yangmin Shan. Its about a 1000 meters of stiff climb, but on the other side ... the fleshpots of Taipei!
