SRAM force or Shimano Ultegra SL

I doubt there is much difference from a Clyde perspectrive. Force will be much lighter than Ultegra.

Haven't used either. I'm running 9 speed Ultegra and am happy with it. If I had to choose, I would probably pick the heavier of the two(half joking).

FWIW I have Force on my new bike and 105 Ultegra mix on my old one and all I can say is "Use the Force" seriously this is one heek of a grouppo, I'm already having visions of Red on my new bike and the Force on my old one. Having said that in reality Rival is likely the way to go if you want to try Sram as a Clyde wieght is not an issue and tons of guys are using Rival just to have the Sram shifting and I can attest it's the best I've ever used head and shoulders over my old grouppo. And yes I'm a clyde at 222lbs.

I have SRAM Red on my current bike and had Ultegra SL on my old bike. Personally, I really like the SRAM gruppos, but they're not for everyone. SRAM gives supremely fast, positive shifts but they're not always smooth. Shifting with the front derailluer, in particular, can be less refined with SRAM and Shimano. The SRAM FD gets the job done, but it might involve more clatter or an extra quarter to half a pedal stroke sometimes. If you're used to working on Shimano-equipped bikes, you'll probably find that it takes longer to get SRAM components setup and tuned to perfection.

If you do decide to go with SRAM, think about whether you want Rival, Force, or Red. For 2009, Force doesn't make a whole lot of sense, IIRC. The Rival gruppo now has almost all of the same features that Red does. Force is a bit lighter than Rival, but with a cost approaching Red. I believe this changes somewhat for 2010, but if you're buying 2009 components it probably makes sense to pick Red or Rival and skip Force... unless you're getting a really good deal on it.

I actually find the jump from small ring to big ring with the Force is way faster than my old Shimano, I do have a friend thou who is using Red and he is having issues with FD. I should say was, he put a Force one on and problem solved.

I, too, am using a Force FD with my SRAM Red gruppo.

7 times out of 10, I get a smooth fast shift from the small ring to the big ring. 2 times out of 10, I get a fast shift that involves some drivetrain clatter. 1 time out of 10, it seems like the chain doesn't grab immediately and it takes an extra quarter- to half-stroke for the chain to move and it involves some clatter. This is compared to normal SRAM shifts, not Shimano.

With Ultegra SL and DuraAce 7800, 10 out of 10 shifts were smooth and quiet, though I think that both of these Shimano gruppos do take slightly longer to complete the shift than SRAM. Don't mean to suggest that one is better than the other, merely that they're different. Coming from Shimano, I was initially put off by SRAM's front shifting. But with some additional riding time and some additional tuning, I've finally come to terms with it...

I like the Ultegra-based shifting very much on my main bike, the Buenos Aires. Am also currently building another LeMond (N + .5 I guess it would be? (pics)) using Rival gruppo and will soon have an opinion to offer on your question. I like the affordability of the Rival and the routing of the cables under the bar tape. Ultegra shifting has been entirely fine, mind you, but I do not care for the dark tint of the SL group and just wanted to try something different.

I just thought I'd mention that according to the founder of SRAM, the proper pronunciation is just as it's spelled. There's no "sh" sound in the name at all. At least that's what he said in a magazine interview I read last year.

My take on the matter? I've used 7, 8 and 9 speed systems of 105, Ultegra and Dura Ace. All were finely tuned and all preformed well!

Unless you're Andy Schleck and have to worry about dropping a chain and losing the TDF, they all perform well.
