uber-clyde bike of choice?

"I think the Specialized Hardrock is still considered here as the uber-clyde bike of choice" The Historian

Ok, does this statement still hold true? I've been looking around for a new 'starter bike' because I'm ready to move on from my ill-fitting, clunky WM Schwinn. I went to the nearest LBS last week just 'browsing', told the salesperson what I wanted and my budget. She showed me several bikes that were 'just ok' and then I saw it, on the top rack was a beautiful, magnificent Kona Hoss and it was love at first site. Needless to say it was the only one they had, not my size, and out of my budget range . I mentioned the Hardrock and she said that it was one of their best sellers so I went to take a look at the ones they had on the floor, tried one and it was amazing, I fell in love right then and there with the Hardrock!

Anyway, I was just wondering if the Hardrock is still considered "the uber-clyde bike of choice"? I don't want to make this decision based solely on emotion so give me some feedback please. My budget is around $400 so is there anything else in that price range that is better?

Yeah, I hear the Hoss and Hardrock mentioned all the time. Check the 'Sticky' section of this forum for recommendations.

I've had nary a problem with the Hoss after two winters hard riding. And I busted more than my share of frames before that.
