Mavic Cosmos under a 300# clyd?

club member has a set good condition Mavic Cosmos wheelset FS for a nice price... while i'd prefer a higher spoke count i'd like a better wheelset (non freewheel) on my new to me trek...

does anyone here have any experience with these wheels?

thanks
mark

USED! I wouldn't even consider a new set at my 230 lbs. My bud payed about $450. Thrashed them in less than a year at 210 lbs. Strong rider but the wheels sucked. I made roadside emergency repairs on them so that he could get back home.

Another factor to consider is that replacement spokes are hard to find/order. He had the shop replace the black bladed spoke, took about a month to get it. Next problem about 2 months later, he had was more than one spoke. He trashed them then went back to 32 spoke wheels.

He wasn't any faster with the Cosmos.

Don't do it. Askiums, yes. Cosmos, no.

Lighter rim options would be Mavic Open Pros or DT Swiss RR 1.1 - right around 430 grams

Heavier deep dish options would be Velocity Deep V or DT Swiss RR 1.2, 550+ gram.. If you chose this option you would only need to go with 32 hole, because they are both 30mm height rims..

MAVIC CPX22s

How about MAVIC CPX22s in 36H config? Will they hold up under 265+?

Mavic Cosmos came on my NOS '03 Bianchi Vigorelli. Been riding them since 2006 with no problems. Started riding at 235 pounds and the cycling got me down under 200 (now I'm just barely over 200 ). Before purchasing the Vigorelli, reviews called the Mavic Cosmos "bombproof" with 24 spoke count in the front and 28 in back. I ride in Houston so have my share of rough pavement. Only thing I've had to do is true after thousands of miles. I love the wheelset and would recommend them, although I don't think I would ever buy a used wheelset of any type.

Edit: misread the posts and thought OP was 230 pounds. Don't know how well they would hold up to 300 rider + bike weight.

I lost my rear wheel just last month in an incident while my bike was on a rear bike rack. The 32-spoke count Mavic replacement wheel I bought is heavier and definitely not the same quality. Haven't ridden it enough to say if it affects my riding any, and if you are all concerned with riding a 28 spoke count wheel, by all means, don't do it. But the wheels performed fine for me.

ended up with a deal I couldn't refuse on a mismatched pair of wheels

Front wheel is a Ritchey Deep Section, Rear wheel is a Ksyrium Elite and brand new Vittoria Randonneur tires... also got a set of old vuelta airline 2 32 spoke wheels (nice V shape rim) from a early 2k's trek 1000

I figure i'll use the airline2's for most riding... prob put some lighter weight tires on the good wheelset (reads like the randonneur's weigh over 500g) and use them for faster group rides or longer rides...

any clyds have experience with the deep section and ksyrium elite wheels? they sure look sweet... although a little "off" on my bike haha
