Cycling outfit
Hi people I would appreciate any input in this matter. Lost 38lbs over the last year now weigh 218 and just got a cycling jersey that finally fits. I am not the fastest rider but do love the sport. Is it wrong for a clydesdale to wear tight clothes? The outfit I got was a team Barloworld and I want to wear it in the worst way worried about looking stupid?
What the opinon out there yes or no?

Wear what you want. Tight and breathable is way more comfortable in the heat than a concealing tent of cotton. If it shows off your gut a bit that's all the more incentive to drop more pounds. I do admit to feeling rather exposed the first time I rode in a proper bike jersey, but I got over it.
I can't imagine you'll get anything less than 100% support from this forum. Unless someone hates team Barloworld.

I wear full kit when I ride, and I am 250.
Cycling clothes were designed for a reason. The tight pants do not flap around (and neither does my anatomy in them). The shirts are long in the back so no plumber's crack. They have nifty pockets to hold my wallet/whatever so I am not crunched over them in the front pocket (if I wore pants) while riding. Bottom line is that you are wearing the right outfit for the sport. I don't do it too look cool or make me go faster. I wear it because it makes sense and it is designed for this purpose.
Then again I do carry a set of nylon shorts for when I am going into the grocery store. I put them on when I get off the bike so that I am not smuggling grapes in front of the kiddies. Makes me more comfortable, and I am sure at least some of the people I pass are more comfortable not having to see parts of me that should remain personal.

Longing for a Tail Wind
How tall are you? I ask because 218 lbs would be a nice weight to get to for me (6'2"), haha. I am 260 lbs and I wear regular cycling shorts and jerseys. As noted they serve a real purpose and if you are actually on your bike and riding they really aren't immodest.
Now, I prefer not to stand around in them, but that isn't the end of the world either. You certainly aren't going to get arrested wearing a Barloworld kit. And, I have found no matter what I wear, it has little to do with whether or not I get yelled at by passing motorists.
So wear it, ride, enjoy!

Few look anything less than absurd in a full kit. That said, they sure are comfortable. Any comments that arise from your appearance will be outweighed by the comfort of purpose designed clothes.

I'm 6'6", 250 pounds, and I have Randonneurs USA placing a custom order for jerseys that will fit me. (They stock up to 2XL wool jerseys, and I need a 3X from Woolistic.) I've also got 3X jerseys from my company team, and the Seattle Randonneurs, and a 2XL Tour de Cure jersey which is cut large so it fits like my other 3X jerseys.

Go for it! It will feel a bit odd at first but you'll soon forget about the looks when you experience the comfort. The only complaints I've ever received about my wearing of cycling clothes comes from my teenaged sons. (It makes an awesome threat though - they behave or I'll let their friends see me in full kit).

I'm 5'10" & 250 ish and wear bibs with a jersey. However, I am careful not to wander too far from my bike....

Wear what you want. If you're not comfortable in the spandex, then don't wear it.
Personally, I'm happiest in a loose fitting running shirt (thin and breathable) and either gel padded compression pants or Champion basketball shorts, depending how long the ride is.

I say if you like the kit enough to go out then buy it then wear it and the heck with what other people think. I have seen people bigger than me ( I weight 252 lbs.) in tight cycling kit just enjoying the heck out of it, riding and having a good 'ol time.

My friend. Wear what wicks sweat away from your body, and wear what doesnt flap in the wind. Don't worry about other peoples opinions. Like someone posted earlier, it will give you encouragement to workout harder. What's important is that youre having fun and youre being productive and burning calories. Youre better than 95% of this nation. John

I am starting to prefer tighter fitting bibs. As long as the back pockets are not totally stretched out and work you will be fine.

I want to get a funky cycling jersey partly b/c I think it gives you better visibility to traffic.
I am a fit 235 lb guy and wear a 48 long sportcoat. Would a 4xl jersey be a good fit or huge on me. I was doing the website chest conversions and 4xl is what they recommended

Other then the fact that you will never find me wearing an "outfit" (how metro is that?). I say go for it. Since your new to stretchy, form fitting, lycra pants though there is one thing to keep in mind. The black shorts be your friend.
Puleeese, in the name of all that be good and holy, do not be like the Polish Cycling Team. Do not wear shorts that are bright colored over your crotch. Not red, yellow, orange, or safety lime green. Lt. Blue is out of the question.

My personal rule: spandex is not appropriate on anyone who is outside of arms reach of their bicycle. Like others have said, cycling clothing is purpose built equipment, so wear what is comfortable. For me, if I'm going for a long ride, I wear bibs and a jersey; the commute to work gets a pair of MTB shorts (cycling shorts that look like regular cargo shorts) and a jersey or a "tech fabric" shirt; just going for a ride with the Mrs. and/or family, whatever I happen to be wearing at the time.
Comfort is the main thing.
D
p.s. I would definitely not recommend the team Jelly Belly kit, its just a bad idea.

I walked the kids to school wearing a spandex bib and a loose fitting wicking T, wheeling the bike, duck walking in cleats.
Probably looked like a dork in the schoolyard. However, I consoled myself by thinking "wonder how many moms are looking at me thinking "I've never noticed his gorgeous legs before, I have to keep my eye on him now"

The only team kit I'd consider buying is the Unattached Rider stuff. I actually really want the kit....

going fast is all that matters, so who cares what people think.
One guy yelled "nice crack" at me from a passing car (i guess my shirt had ridden up). I not so politely told him he should get his own fat ***** on a bike.

I have a fatcyclist.com kit and it fits wonderfully. The chamois on the bibs feels real smooth, only problem is the inseam is to long for me and i have to fold them up a few times.
