    Specialized Carmel 3 wheel problems

    Anyone have a Specialized Carmel 3 and been having wheel problems. I'm around #450 and had 70 miles before I popped the first spoke. Since then I've put another 30 miles on and have popped 4 more. Popped 2 on one ride and barely made it through one ride after having spoke fixed when I popped another. The LBS where I got the bike was nice enough to let me borrow another wheel until we figure something out. The wheel itself seems to be ok with no hops or apparent warping. They have thought we might try and go with 12 gauge spokes to see if that works. I have seen a few people said they had a Carmel and had to replace or rebuild the wheel. I'm just looking for some info as to what they did or what other information anyone else may have. I'm trying to keep this repair on a budget but I have to get the bike where I can ride. Thanx

    Which version of the Carmel do you have, the 26 or 700 version?

    15 gauge spokes on either wheel set, IMHO, are to light for this bike's design and is likely the problem you are experiencing against the size of the motor.

    A Carmel 26 model

    The rims are sturdy enough, it is the quality of the spokes that will continue to be the concern. I have a 2007 Specialized Crossroads, same wheel set but with 14 gauge spokes, (they moved to 15 g in 2008), and yet have broken 2 pokes the first 500 miles, with 290 lb motor. No issues since motor went smaller to 265 at present.

    Hopefully the LBS you are working with are not charging for the repairs, they recommended this model, correct? They should stand behind their recommendation and work to make it right.
