Put in Perspective
I've been getting in a lot of good cycling recently. I totaled it up and proudly informed my wife I'd ridden 198 miles in the past eight days (I needed to include last Monday to make it really impressive). She quickly replied that, "Some guys can ride across the country in eight days". I paused and recalled that I had recently told her about the Race Across America winner, Dani Wyss, who rode 3021 miles in 8 days 5 hours and 45 minutes. That sure shut me up. Until I stated howling in laughter anyway.
So I guess I'm 15 times slower than Dani Wyss. That leaves me some room for improvement. Of course, he had a support crew. And upon closer checking I see that my 198 miles was in 8 days and 38 minutes. No telling how much further I could have gone with an extra 5 hours and 7 minutes.

Good point, but Dani didn't have a day job either. I managed 116 miles last week, which is a record for me. Job, weather, and life conspire against us.

That's purty darn good for a normal person!...One year I had lots of other riders competing against me in the mileage dept. They edged me out but I was working 7 days a week on graveyard, wearing steel toe boots at a steel company. I didn't feel so bad after finding out half of them were not working when they beat my 7300 miles that year!
Have you logged onto bikejournaldotcom? It adds them up for ya. It's kinda fun watching the others around you. Even more fun when you get to know a few. That is if you're into logging miles!

I'm not sure but your wife may be my wife's sister. They have the same loving and supporting personality, lol.

I did check out bikejournal, but it's giving an SQL Server error '80004005' message for most pages this morning. I'll have to check it out later. Though I do already enter my mileage in two of three different places, not sure I need another.
I do work full time, and as a 245 lb. Clydesdale pushing 50 years old I'm not anywhere near the same class as the RAAM riders. But I'm making progress. Though I'm a little stuck at getting further than 40 or 50 miles a day. Part of that is a need to plan rest stops to refuel etc. rather than one non stop ride on two bottles of water.
For my Sunday ride I deliberately rode part of the RAAM route in the opposite direction. I managed to see one of the riders followed by his support van climbing up a steep hill I was coasting down. I called out some encouragement but didn't have time to snap a picture or anything. I think it was the eight person team T802 given the time and place. Quite the insane achievement that race.

My last 300k took me 17h 03m to complete. The first riders across the finish did the same course in 10h 34m. I don't judge my riding on how fast someone else is, so no one's finish time matters but my own.

But is not pride a sin? Should I not seek humility?
I'll take some of both. Pride in my accomplishments, yet humbled and amazed by the achievements of the best.
I'm always struck by the many levels of skill that exist in any human activity. No matter how good you get there is always someone better. If you can't live with that you'll end up miserable. It's nearly impossible not to compare yourself with others, ego demands it, but you can't dwell on it. Doesn't hurt to let it inspire you to get to the next level, even if there are an awful lot of levels.

I also had trouble this morn with bikejournal too. The site used to be a little better as it was totally free. I did pay the $20 donation fee as I've been using it for 5'ish years(?). IF you don't pay the donation, then one is limited to 4 columns of info. Since I pay the donation, it allows me eveything I want or need. I can track calories, hr, tire wear and every other thing I don't really care about!... I'm a basic info guy so I just like to see the little red bike by my name!
