I had my fastest ride yet this year on my way home from work tonight. I averaged 1-2 miles an hour faster than normal. I was thinking while my mind was trying to make sense of how I suddenly got so much stronger. Then it hit me.... I wasn't stronger, I was being smarter. Tonight I wasn't trying to kill myself with pushing my limits the whole trip home. I stayed in moderate gears and kept myself in my comfort zone. Before tonight I was giving everything I had at any given time. Bound and determined to raise my AVE. speed. And I bonked without even realizing it. I would kill myself riding hard and then undo any good that I had mad by dropping down to 8-9 MPH while recovering, slowly. Tonight I found gearing that I thought that I could maintain and resisted the temptation to hammer. And instead of my speed drifting all over the place I was able to maintain for long periods of time. Heck I went a good 15 minutes tonight without coasting at all. That's fantastic for me. And it only took me 25 years to learn......
