First Ride - Sore but fun

Picked up the bike yesterday and went out for my first ride today. Made a mile around the block without stopping and found I am going to have a love / hate relationship with riding. Initially the wobbling and the apprehension of can I do this to I remember how to do this. I love the feeling of the ride but man my but is sore.

Had a minor problem with my detailer getting the bike into high gear and am off to the lbs to have it adjusted. But I am looking forward to many more rides.

Congratulations! If it is any consolation - we all had sore butts. The enjoyment you'll get from riding will help the discomfort fade. You might want to make sure you are set up OK on the bike if it gets worse.

When I started riding recently, I thought that all these people that said a sore butt was normal, couldn't possibly have been as sore as I was. They all seemed so dismissive about it, and I felt like I could hardly sit down. Of course, it passed pretty quickly, and now I hardly remember how sore I was.
Congrats on the new bike! I thought I had a derailer problem with mine after my first ride, and it turned out it was just my fat feet pushing the pedals to hard while trying to shift.

What bike did you get? Pictures please!

Welcome to the sore butt club. The soreness lessens to the point you don't notice it except on long rides. Give it time and you'll get to that place.

Congratulations!

My first ride was a mile or so around the neighborhood. I came home so sore and tired! Funny to look back on that now.

The sore butt syndrome is the right of initation we can't seem to escape. The good news is that it is temporary and a small price to pay for the lifetime of fun that follows.

My first ride the day I got my bike was only a mile and I was exhausted. My next ride was on a bike trail. Way too far and yes my rear was sore. Definitely invest in a pair of bike shorts. I got to the point that I didn't know if I wanted to keep riding. The shorts made the difference for me. Four months ago I started riding for the first time in over 20 years. Yesterday I did a new personal best of over 13 miles. You can do it. Keep spinning..

Three years ago I bought a used mountain bike. The saddle hurt so much I immediately bought a bigger padded saddle and it was fine. I rode quite a bit that summer, but none last summer as I spent the summer overseas. This year I gave my mountain bike to my 22 yr. old son, put the original seat back on it and kept the padded seat just in case. I bought a Trek FX 7.3 with, what looked like, one of those skinny little seats again. The guy at the local bike store told me I might be surprised, and, even at my size, I might like the new seat. That was 3 weeks and over 500K ago and I've not had any issues with the saddle. When I get to, about, 10K, I have to get up off the seat a bit, but that's all. The day I did 100K, the last 25K was sore on the ole' sit bones, but that seemed to be more an issue with the butt muscles getting tired. When I was done, I didn't hurt, and I felt fine the next day. The new seat is better than the bigger padded seat, which, by the way, has been given to a friend with an old mountain bike.

Another thing, my riding, so far, has been without riding shorts. I've been riding in swimming trunks so far.

I think I may have been lucky, but a good fit can do wonders.

Congratulations! First time I rode when I started biking I almost crashed my bike... In the parking lot!

Hope you can find a good routine that works well for you.

Sore butt bones...yep..and when you lay off for awhile they come back to remind you what it was like on day one. Keep it up.

Way to go! I remember my first ride after a break of no riding for about 30 years. It was a mile or so, and I hurt all over for a week. My butt, legs, arms all hurt. But I was in pretty sad shape to start with. Keep it up.

gjweave0 08-10-09 11:16 AM

Well it went much better this last week. I still hurt but much less than last week.

Definitely look into a pair of bike shorts... Made the difference for me.

Keep riding

Keep it up at least 3 times a week and then try to add mileage. We were all there before, good luck. ECB1
