Short tire life

Need some advice on some long lasting road bike tires. I am ridding gp4000 on my second set this season, only got around 1200 miles on first set. Rear tire starts to square off after only 150 miles.

No need to replace the set. Your front tire should give a lot more service than the rear. Some folks move the front to the rear and put a new tire on the front, and some just replace the one that is dead.

1200 miles does sound like not very much for those tires. Why did you replace them? Too many flats, a major hole, or did they just look ragged?

I don't have a specific recommendation for longer wearing tires. I've heard that the Soma tires ride pretty rough, but that might be the case for any really long-lasting tire.

I just replaced a set of Bontrager Race Lite Hardcase that had 2837 miles on them. The only real reason I replaced them is the side walls had some rubbing from a mis-aligned brake pad, otherwise I could have easily gotten another 500-1000 miles I think. I know they are on the heavy side, and can give a rough ride, but I had 1 flat with them in all those miles, and I hate flats, so I put a new set on.

1200 miles? Zactly the reason I don't use nice tires on my bike. I've tried but get about 2000 tops out of race tires. That would be 2 to 3 tires a year. Can't afford it year after year (13 consecutive riding).

I use a Specialized Armadillo 700X25 on my training roadie. It feel s heavy at first but last forever. I'll train with it, climb and whatever then place a GP4000 for an event day . That's it then take it off.

I save the good stuff for Gina's roadie as she will get about 5000 out of a GP4000.

Aramdillos is the longest lasting I've found. I've had terrible luck with Gatorskins, single and tandem. We got about 1000 miles on the Gator and the chord is showing through! Maybe it the combined weight on the tandem but $40 a tire is an expensive lesson.

I did find the Serface Seca at REI after reading the tandem forum. Folding version is at the LBS for $35. I found the wire version for $20 at REI. 700X28 worked nicely on the tandem. Rolled well but durability will tell in time.

I did see the 700X25 also $20 but didn't see any 23's. Heck, I'll use a 25 on my roadie, for training.

I think there is a thread in the road forum on Serfas today!

I just noticed that my first 700-32 Schwalbe Marathon Plus is showing the blue wear marks in the center of the rear tire-after 2,300 miles. That tire never had a flat. I ordered another one just like it.

I like Continental Ultra Gatorskins and Bontrager Hardcase tires. They are not race tires, but both last me around 2500 miles for the rear tire, barring something like a big side-wall gash (it happens to the most careful of riders...run over glass in a patch of gravel that you can't avoid, etc.).

I've heard nothing but great things about the Schwalbe Marathons as well, but they are just too expensive for my blood.

Disregard if you're already doing this, but I make sure my tires are inflated before most every ride. Occasionally I'll get lazy and not check pressure for one day. My tires can lose 10psi in 3 days, and under-inflated tires wear more quickly.
