Opinions on Specialized Allez.......

I have been riding every single day for the past few months and I am really enjoying it. I ride a trek 7200 hybrid and love it. However while riding I see alot of people riding road bikes in groups and I visualize my self one day being able to ride with a group like that. At this moment I know I cant and wont attempt to try to do so as I have lost some weight but I am still far from my goal of being under 200 pouns I have 85 pounds to go. well here is the dilenma I have an employee that used to ride a road bike (Specialized Allez) and now he is just into mountain biking. He knows that I am riding trying to lose weight and also that In my future I would like to have a road bike. Well today he brought his road bike in and said that I could have his bike, shoes and all the accessories on the bike for $1,300.00. I am not ready physically to ride it but I know I will within the next 8-10 months. So my questions are two of them is the bike worth it? is the bike any good? as I know nothing about road bikes...
thanks for taking the time to read and offering any suggestions. Money is not an issue at all as far as just buying it. I know the frame is my size but will have to make changes to my fitting.

I have 2010 Allez Sport and I love it. Mine is Sora/Tiagra equipped with a carbon fork. It was $850 brand new. That one looks like a carbon fork and stay and if it has Ultegra all around and comes with lights/computer/shoes, 1300 doesn't seem out of line if it really only has 500 miles. Did he know what year it is? Is it an Allez Elite or similar upgraded model?

This bike is a 2007 Allez Expert Double. The entire groupset is Ultegra. It has carbon forks, stays and seat post and the rest of the frame is aluminum. The bike brand new was $2500 without any accessories. I have the same bike. I absolutely love my bike. It's a somewhat aggressive bike and I am actually going to make some changes for comfort. With as few miles on it it's probably a decent buy.

I have a mountain bike and the road bike and much prefer the road bike.

Good luck

That's a good deal. I would pay special attention to anything carbon fiber on that bike to look for any cracks or dings.

Like new Specialized with Ultegra componets for $1300 seems like a decent deal to me. Those wheels might be a bit too weak

I haven't ridden an Ultegra Allez but I tested the Sora Allez and the Roubaix Double (Carbon 105 level bike) and the Roubaix was a dream compared to the Allez but that was I believe due to the Componetry difference. I didn't feel much difference in frame geometry but I only spent maybe 15 mins on each bike. My buddy ended up buying the brand new Roubaix double for $1500 before tax and accessories.

If it fits you I'd get it and ride today. There are plenty of people on here at 285 or above that are riding road bikes. I think you would be okay.

255 riding a CAAD9-5, works well. I wouldn't worry too much unless you were 300lbs+.

As far as weight goes, I would say you wouldn't have to lose any weight to start riding a road bike, but if you really wanted to wait till you were a little lighter I would say 250 would be fine too. I am 285 and looking at the 2011 allez and I have heard that my weight won't be a problem.

Hey gang I appreciate all the feedback. I have the bike sitting in my office and have not been able to bring it home yet to try it out. My friend said to take it and ride it over the weekend to see how I would enjoy it. He is in no hurry and neither am I so it could work. Stay tuned for updates whether I buy it or pass.

i ride the spec roubaix (close cousin of allez) and love it. at your weight (close to mine) be prepared to break a few rear spokes and build a custom wheel (i did)

I'd buy it if it fits. wheels etc are always swappable.

If you decide it fits you and that you like it (and the Allez is a great bike) ride it a little while, maybe 100-200 miles. Then take the rear wheel into a competent wheelbuilder and have the wheel re-tensioned. It should last you a good long time.

I rent an Allez and I'm 205 it as the entry level model but it was fine for it's spec the bike was fun and responsive... I really enjoyed it

I preferred the Gaint COR1 I have at home because I like the 105 more than the sora... but that bike is ultegra so I'd say you will be happy

I'd 2nd the comment about having a good wheel builder tension up the wheels
