Sits with bowed head and busted wheel
Ok, 25 years and oh god how many thousands of miles on road bikes without a busted wheel. It appears that I finally done it. 
Didn't notice a ping, just noticed a slight rubbing noise coming from the rear. Didn't break a spoke and no visible cracks in the rim, but when we got back to Angel Stadium I noticed two opposing spokes on the drive side of my rear wheel were ridiculously loose. As these are 24 spoke rims with paired spokes, I've been expecting them to break a thousand miles ago so I check both the better half's and my rims before loading the bikes each ride.

So were any of your other wheels that DID NOT break happend to be low spoke count wheels?
I gave up on low count wheels. I can never get more than 2,000 miles before they go whacko! That's why I use 32 spokes on Deep V's Over 20,000 miles no problems!
Plus, new wheels should be taken back to the shop for a retension after 200 or so breakin miles. Or they WILL break after a coupe of thou.
Most shops will deny it, but it's true. I think they are afraid to do it as most aren't really wheelguys.

My Klein Quantum that I rode from 90 - 92 had Specialized 3 spoke carbon wheels, i'd say that's an even lower count but i only put about 6000 miles on it. My Stevenson had 32/32 wheels that were bomb proof cause I cyclocrossed with it as well as touring. Those wheels went 70k miles. The Xero's on the OCR has 4000 miles on em.

After finding out who you are, I saw a guy on an MS ride back in 92 with a Klein Quantum bike that looked like you. It was the MS ride form Rancho Cucamonga to Palm springs. 2 days with a camp in Yucaipa.

Oh! Wasn't you!
But looking at the 3 spoke carbon wheels, I'd say that's a diffeent class of wheels than stainless type spokes. Heck, the Aerospoke wheels claim enough strength to support a motorcycle!

There is that... I wouldn't dare ride 3 spoke wheels today. I'd feel just as silly as if i were riding a Cervelo S3 or Ridley Noah.

get them checked out by a good shop, with a good wheel guy, if everything looks good, get them retensioned and you should be good to go.

They are going into the shop tomorrow. In the meantime, the wheels from one of the hangar queens is going on the bike while the rear wheel is in. I haven't had a chance to seriously look at it, but I'm betting the rim hole either cracked or dimpled. with just light finger pressure I can offset both spokes 1/4". I'm not wanting to spend a ton of money cause next Jan/Feb the bike is getting replaced with a Roubaix, Cervelo RS, or Colnago CLX 2.

I took my wheel to LBS had the wobbles removed and them both trued as well as new grease and thicker tubes....
no $ to get them back dammit!

Hate it when I do that.
The original Xero wheels (Giant house brand) were paired spokes 24/20. Apparently when I jumped on it coming out of one of the underpasses on SART, I pulled 2 opposing drive side spokes partially through the rim. There wasn't a crack, but the wheel builder spent an hour trying to get the wheel both round and true and was really concerned that it'd pop again first time I stood and attacked on a hill. I decided, new wheels would keep me from getting dumped on my A** when I pulled the spokes out of the old ones.
The only negative is the ratchett is loud when you freewheel.. Like Mavic or Zipp wheels. Everyone knows when you're coasting.

MY bud took his roadie in, two new tubes and a $30 tire. Installed, $79 out the door!
I build my own wheels for free. No need to pay someone to true them. It's so easy, I cant figure out why someone would pay.
$2.99 gets me thicker tubes at Sport Chalet. They are thicker cuse they are generic. I doubt the $12 LBS heavy duty tubes work any better. Funny, if you want thinner tubes, the LBS will charge you more. If you want thicker tubes, the LBS will charge you more!

Man, I have a set of those low spoke count Xero wheels myself and am wondering how long they are going to last under me with all the chip seal road that I have around here. Right now they a little over 1500 miles on them, but I always worry about them. Fortunately, I have been using the OCR A1 only for organized events and using my cross bike for with its 32 count spoke wheels for everything else.

I thought it was my crank so I just rolled back home downhill. I inspected it on the road but didn't notice the crack till I got home and inspected it in the light.
About 2 weeks before it snapped, I was on the SART with another forum member (Chuck 5.2). That was the day I cranked it up to 30 MPH by Imperial. It's a good thing it didnt snap then!
I rarely stand to sprint. I feel the frames flex too much on smaller diameter tubes. Not as much on my fat tubed Cannondale (CAAD3) but still I worry about standing to crank!
I check out the pics people post here of carbon bikes. Like the Blue! Sweet bike but for myslef, I'd go with a bigger BB area like the Cervelo or the new Giant. Giant has a huge BB and headtube too. But I won't worry about that since I can't afford one, so I will remain seated on the sprints!

BTW, I have a friend 20 lbs lighter than I am that snapped a steel De Rosa so I'm not debating material here. Maybe BB area sizing!
But a $4,000 steel DeRosa, snapped like a twig? Ouch! Glad it wasn't my money!
