Thanks guys!! Ya, I am going to do this some more. I'm not sure to what extent since I do have a family that seems to like to spend time with me . An Olympic tri is probably in the works at some time. First I need to get the swimming down. I ordered a Total Immersion DVD yesterday, so I hope that will get me going in the right direction. Also, I am kind of surprised how much I am enjoying running, so I am thinking a half marathon too.

A half marathon is pretty doable. I've done one and have started to transition my training from triathlons back to running. Training for a half is all about just running 2-3 times a week most of the running is an hour or less besides the one long run a week, that may top out at 2 hours so it isn't too intense. I know what you mean about family. Ramp up running slowly as it can lead to overuse injuries (shin splints, plantars fascitas, and ibts syndrone). Rule of thumb run every other day to start with, cross train in between.

I am coming up with what I want my fall/winter training to look like. I have it in my head that I am going to run a half marathon again in newport, last time was a horrible experience due to the weather. I may also do the hometown half marathon in new bedford in march, i've always wanted to but things have come up. I am thinking biking one day a week (35-60 miles), swimming one day a week (1 mile), 3 days of running. This is similar to now but with less biking and swimming. I will also add in strength training, admitedly I haven't touched a weight in ages which isn't good.

So, I did it. It might not be in the same vein as what Sparfy is about to accomplish next week, but it's done.

Timberman Ironman 70.3 now in the books. 8:57:19. I managed to out pace 6 other people in the race, and finished inside the time limit by a whopping 2 minutes, 41 seconds. I had to run a 12 minute final mile to get that time, otherwise I wouldn't have made it at tha 15 minute mile pace I was sitting at for most of the previous 12 miles.

The bike was brutal. Really hilly. I rode almost all of the course walking only both sides of the really big hill and 3 of the steep short ones one way each. I had some terrific sections of the ride, even getting up onto the big ring for a good stretch and really pushing myself. I really opened it up on the downhills when I could, and on one managed to hit 47.3 MPH. It was awesome. I couldn't believe how good that felt. Thankfully the rain stayed mostly away til the run so I had some nice dry roads for top speed descending.

The run was worse than the bike. The bike hurt, my legs seized up one time to the point that I couldnt move, but the run will still worse. I managed a negative split on the 13.1 (meaning I did the last 6.55 faster than I did the first 6.55) which is a tribute to seeing all the great people around me doing so well.

I ache today all over. I'm better than yesterday but Im still having temperature regulation and crazy hunger/thirst feelings (Im starving and suddenly full, even after only consuming a small amount of food).

I will be doing this again, better prepared, stronger, and lighter the next time around.

Ben,
How you feeling about the cranberry this weekend? Are you registered as a clyde? If so you will have about a half an hour head start on me, I registered as age group. I plan to go and hang out during the race on saturday. I am feeling good although i wanted to get in one more open water swim in my wetsuit, maybe tomorrow evening but the race may not be wetsuit eligible anyways. look forward to seeing you sat.

We're coming, but we're not racing. Rach's knee is getting scheduled for an MRI, and frankly I'm just not ready. I just started being able to walk normally today. We're going to pick up our packets and then hang out at our team tent for the race to support our teammates going for the club championship.

Part of me REALLY wants to race it, but I just don't think it's a good idea.

My guess is that the race will not be wet suit legal because even with all this rain it will be hot this weekend, and water temps are really high. I heard 80 was on the low side right now.

We won't be there saturday as we're not getting a place to stay down there. Just driving down early Sunday, picking up our packets and then hanging out at the tent. We aren't deffering our entries because we don't know if we'll still be in Boston next year, and more importantly we want to participate in the post race stuff.

I pop my olympic tri cherry tomorrow morning. I hung out at the race site this morning and watched the sprint tri. It was nice to see it the day before, I now know the transition area. I got my bib number and have everything setup to go in the morning. The goal is under 3:21, swim in 35 minutes, bike in 1:27 (18 MPH avg, I might come in faster than that but think that will hurt the run time), run in 1:11 (11.5 minute miles which is pretty slow for me actually (i do my long runs at almost 10 minute miles) but maybe not after the swim and run). The water temp was 76 this morning so it shouldl be a wet suit legal race. I went to the site this evening and swam in my wetsuit (I haven't swam in it in 2 months) and i had forgot how nice it was to swim in a wetsuit, hence tomorrow i will be swimming in it if legal.

Derek Affonce FOXBOROUGH MA TOTAL TIME: 3:37:51 SWIM: 32:13 T1: 4:56 BIKE: 1:27:44 T2: 3:28 "RUN" 1:29:31

When I got off the bike my lower back spasmed, yes that was with 6.2 miles of running to go. I sucked it up and finished it, I was 17 minutes slower than my target. I will have to repeat another time to improve upon this. The run really wasn't a run it was more of a walk with an occasional jog.

Had two events on the bike that added a couple of minutes. 1) I hate a pretty good hole and my seat decided to rotate nose up. So I had to stop and relevel it via brute force de fist. next with 3 miles left 3 people flatted out 2 were changing their tires. the third wasn't. i asked if he was ok, he said yeah. i asked if he had a tube, he said no. i asked if he wanted one, he said yes. i stopped gave him a tube, asked if he had levers he didn't so i gave him my levers, co2, and patch kit to go with the tube and then headed on my way fingers crossed that i didn't flat in the last 3 miles (i still had a tube just no levers). the gentleman was nice enough to find my bike after the race and leave my small bag with co2 levers and patch kit.

well done Derek you did real well considering your back spasm. I couldn't crawl with that. That was very sporting of you to help the other guy with his puncture

daffonce kicked butt yesterday, and thats even without his incredible show of sportsmanship. You guys/gals have just had a tremendous season so far. awesome!

I added one more race to my calendar to replace the race I was going to do in September with one in October... in Myrtle Beach!

So I got an email from the race director this morning, he included an email from the participant who I gave the tube, levers, and CO2 to. The gentleman offered to pay me for the tube and CO2. I told him to pay it forward. It was a very nice gesture though, the sport is amazing. I truly enjoy the camaraderie of the sport.

great great job tech!!!

serious - to pull that out on the last mile is awesome.

odd how you get the weird stuff the next day - i had some goofies after my race too. which - i managed to slog out. i had a VERY bad day - not from lack of training - just showed up that morning feeling awful, cramped up on the swim and never got happy - just a bad day. but managed to get it all done. so i am now an ironman. if a rusty one!

Sparfy great job. I read your race recap on your blog. That is great that you sucked it up through adversity. Tris can be a bitter lover, and oh so damn cruel.

So after completing my olympic tri I decided that to kick up weight loss and improve my performance next year I would add weightlifting into my routine and cut down some cardio. This also goes along with me training for a half marathon in October (I need to run a good one so I can feel confident to reach my tentative goal of a half ironman next year, my only half marathon to date was a horrible experience), i.e. my cardio is focusing more on my running and only swimming and biking about once a week each (each is planned to be relatively long 1 mile swim and 35 mile bike until winter hits then onto the indoor trainer where I plan to increase my cadence, if needed once i get a cadence computer). I took a few days off after the olympic. I wasn't overly soar but my body did need a break. I started back into cardio and my first few runs were not great, but did do 19 miles in a week. This week my tuesday run was pretty uninspiring, 5 miles on the treadmill averaged about 11 minute miles and did some speed work in there. Last night I lifted doing back bis and legs. I got up this morning at 5 am used the restroom and as i sat on the toilet i was like ugh no way am I running this morning and proceeded back to bed for an hour. I get home tonight after over eating for lunch knowing I have to suck it up and go out for a run. I psych myself up to a 4 miler outdoors (I have been running too much on the treadmill, albeit at a 1 incline to simulate outdoor conditions), telling myself I am going to do it in under 40. I stretch and head out. I start the run my legs are cranky. About half a mile in I evaluate myself. I realize I am feeling pretty good and am feeling pretty fast. I decide I will continue with the effort I am exerting and check my pace at 2 miles. I get to 2 miles and check my pace, I am at 16:30 ish. I am pumped I continue to run. I have to walk up to a red light and stop for a second. I run across the street when it is clear. A car at the light as they begin to drive after I pass them yells out "FAT ASS", I let it slide as I am on a mission. Come up to 3 miles and I check the time I am at about 26ish. I continue to run starting to get winded at this point. I turn onto my street (1/4 mile to go) I pick up the pace and finish strong. End time was 35:23 total run was 4.07 miles 8:48 mile average. I am so excited by this run, especially after the lackluster runs I had been having since the olympic tri, this is about 45 seconds per mile faster than my average run of this type of distance. Ok now that I am done ranting, maybe my insomnia will go away and I can get back to sleep. Remember with enough practice you can become a faster runner. Hoping to conquer the half (probably in october) in 2:20 or about 17 minutes faster than last year.
