On schedule for my first 400 mile month

I looked at my log today and I hit 273 with today's ride. With 10 days left I may set a personal best of 400 plus miles in a month. I am getting stronger because the circuit I ride the hills are getting a little easier to climb. Up until this month, and I have only been riding since November, I have been hit or miss on getting out and riding. I try to get one complete rest day a week (age 56, the old legs need it) and try to push myself at least 2 times. Most of my rides now are 20+ rides where it used to be where 10 was my max. I am not trying to brag on myself but just reporting how extremely pleased with my effort this month. I hit an all time max weight in April of 266 (6'0"). Today I weighed in at 253. I appreciate this forum in keeping me motivated and encouraged.

You should be. I know riders with $4000 bikes and climbing wheels that find routes helping them avoid fwy overpasses! Or won't try more than a 20 mile ride cause their shoes aren't the right color!

A 400 mile month after 9 monhts of riding is GREAT!....Keep up the goodwork!

Do you go bothways? Keeps you honest with the wind and other elements.

Yeah, I hit head wind for about 50% of the ride. The prevailing wind here is normally from the SW. With the latest cool front it is coming from the east the past couple to days.

Great job gap!!! The main thing is, are you having fun? It's amazing how fast the miles can pile up. You should be very proud of what you do. Just think of how many people don't do anything, you're in a very small class.

Hey thanks DanteB. I was one of those that did not do anything unless you count playing golf riding in a cart drinking beer. I have worked hard on both my riding and mental games making myself at times making myself get out and on the bike. Some of the hills I had to take at 9 mph and stopping at the top to catch my breath I am climbing at 12 mph and continuing on. I am far from being a good hill climber (still carrying 250+ lbs), but my cardio and leg strength are both improving almost daily it seems. I know I won't be able to keep the 400+ miles per month up every month, but this has sure been encouraging to see. In November and December I would have never dreamed in less than a year I would be doing this kind of mileage. Thanks for the encouragement.

You're right it is mental Gap, it's so easy to talk yourself out of a ride. When you work up to longer distances it becomes very mental to keep going, you can think of every excuse to stop. Isn't exciting to see the improvement? Just remember to do some rides that are just fun, who cares if they're slow or not very long. Keep us posted on your progress.

Up to 293 as of Sunday, the 23rd. I want to get to 400 by the 30th even though August has 31 days. 107 to go. Pray for good weather this week. I may have to skip my rest day to make it. I like setting goals and I hope I can make this one. It was a stretch goal of mine that may just come true. Wish me luck.

Rested on Monday, but got in a nice 27.5. That moves me to 324 total. I think I am going to make it to 400. Today looks like another good day to ride too. Yeppee.

353 as of yesterday. I have counted 8 full resting days so far this month. I will probably rest today since yesterday was a 30 miler and my legs are beginning to feel a little lifeless. Actually they felt a little heavy during yesterday's ride. Sometimes I don't feel 56 years old, but my legs are letting me know I am. Should be good to go after today. I have already riden more miles in August than all of my mileage in the past 8 months. 47 more to go. Can't wait.

Great job GW. Looks like you're going to meet that stretch goal. I'm trying to get to 100 miles for this week myself for the first time ever. After tomorrow's commute I'll be at 79. Two days to get to triple digits for the week.

Due to busniess travel, my monhtly will probably only hit 240 or so which would also be a high this year. You've motivated me to shoot for 400 in September. Thanks!

MM

Thanks MikeM21. One of my earlier failures when I started in November was not setting any goals and found it was easier to not ride as to ride. This carried on in 2009. So, when August got here I knew I was not going to be out of town on vacation and made it the month of dedication. Since everyone seems to shoot for 100 miles per week I thought I would set mine at 400 for the month (same thing except I liked the idea of a monthly goal.) I hope I can keep this pace up in September and following months since here in Arkansas one can ride nearly 12 months out of the year.

WooooHooooo!!!!!! After having dead legs with no life left in them during Wednesday's ride I decided to rest Thursday. It paid off. I got in a 32.36 mile ride this morning, a personal best. I could have riden longer but wanted to save some for Saturday. Now my total toward 400 miles in August stands at 387.72. The weekend forecast is super so breaking 400 should be accomplished Saturday. Now, I am already thinking of goals for September and goals for the 4th quarter of the year.

On Saturday morning, August 29th, gapwedge broke the 400 mile barrier with a morning ride that pushed the monthly total to 411 with 2 days to spare. On Tuesday I will recap my monthly stats. One of the first goals I have made in a VERY long time.

Your doing great. Someday you will ride 400 miles a week.
Where do you log your miles?
Ride Safe.
