    Mixing Road and Off Road

I've been switching back and forth between road and mountain all year, and now I have a new thing.

I found a route from the house where I can do 25% mountain biking with technical obstacles, 35% bike path, and 40% bike lane and still stop by Lance Armstrong's shop for coffee.

Any clydes in the Austin area want to join me for a ride one day?

I mix and match but not on the same bike. I don't like riding the knobbies on the road, tears 'em up and I can't afford new tires every month!

Wednesday..5 miles of some stiff dirt climbing. 10 mile roundtrip to Potato Mtn

Last 1/2 mile is a stiff climb up!

Thursday, 21 mile climb with 5000 ft climbing (42 roundtrip) with a couple of friends on the roadies

Grrlyrida and me at Baldy Village

    Overlooking Azusa and Hwy 39

Taking a pic of my bud at 30 mph on the switchbacks. I found if I time it right, I can snap the pic and put the camera back in my jerey pocket before I hit the turn.

Beanz, you live in a gorgeous part of the country, man...and you have a good eye for pix, too.

Anybody else notice the auto tire tracks in that last photo? The guy just went "Sailin' right out there."

You think 100 degree weather stops us Californians? ..Next you're going to say we don't ride in 45 mph winds. We've done these rides in 100 degree temps and 45 mph winds. Last ride we did with 45 mph winds, one rider was blown over and knocked out cold. Not my fault he wasn't a Clyde!

You can verify that with Markadam (Clyde poster)

Zoste, there was anothe section of road that rubber ALL OVER it. I was going to take a pic, maybe I should have!

BTW, we've had a cooling trend so these rides were done in cooler weather, 86 degrees!

About a 3rd of the way up. Does my friend Grrlyrida look cool?

    Nice route.
I purchased a set of specialized borough tires. They are 700x45 and I put them on a trek fx. These tires are great off road and they are very quite and smooth on the road. They do not have the knobs in the middle.
I wish I were near that route instead if in flat middle Ga.

We have a MUP that is paved up to the county line then continues quite a way as "double track" with crushed gravel and lots of growth along the side. I think they clear it by driving ATV's through it. Always wondered what kind of damage it would do to my 700x25s or wheels. I started down it once and turned around since I wasn't prepared and also just missed a large burrow right in the path.

Here are a couple shots of the tires I am referring to.

The outside walls are a little thin for my taste but I have yet to see anything to worry about with them.
I have gone off road with my stock 700x32 tires before and they do great on hard packed surfaces but I do not care for them when I am taking a sharp or fast turn on dirt. Gravel really seems to throw the thinner tires to one side or another so that is a second down fall. I have found the tires I posted perfect for combo riding. The price was not bad either. I gave about 30 bucks per from a LBS.
