I'm not a Clydesdale, I'm a rhinoceros, but for some reason the
neighborhood kids call me Bigfoot. I think that's unkind just cuz
I wear size 14s, am 3 foot shoulder to shoulder, and hate to be
messed with.
It's all about that cursed tooth I found on the beach.
Ever since I've had this strange craving for lichens and new spruce
needles. I mean growing 2 inches past age 50 is plain unnatural.
That's not to mention the unsolicited advances from female sasquatch
while hiking in the the deep forest. It's plum embarrassing what with
me being a married man.

I'm a proud Clydesdale. At 210 I'm the same weight I was in college. Too bad cheap rear bicycle hubs and spokes don't seem to like me much.

I'm around 390 lbs, 6'9", and only 23 years old. I'm not nearly in as bad a shape as I should be at this weight but I haven't seen under 300 in 8 years and I've gone the past 15 being referred to as ******. But I scored a fuji gran tourer for free the other day and it feels good for a fit I don't have an extremely long inseam so I guess that helps. God willing as long as I take it easy and don't go flying off the curbs it should hold out until I can buy some way stronger rims.

New guy here 6'6" 240lbs. A little back ground about six years ago I went to the doctor and stepped on the scale. I was surprised to see 265 staring me in the face. I started working out and got down around 210 (even dropped under 200 for a BJJ competition). Fast forward to today I'm back up around 240 and really out of shape. This is partly because I moved away from my active friends who would get me out the door doing stuff. My goal is to consistently use my bike for a majority of commuting, build the capacity to ride 50 miles continuous, and lose at least 20 lbs by December.

I'll be officially joining this group by next spring as I'm currently on bedrest following a broken femur. I'm 6'1" and usually at ~185. Do I get a temp pass here even though I've been bending frames and wheels, snapping handlebars and trashing bearings with ease at *only 185?

If you are bending frames at 185# I can only imagine how you broke your femur.
Good luck healing.

I'm 5'9" @ 216lbs (down from 269) and haven't had a problem with bearings or spokes.
Mavic 28/24 wheels on the Allez, Fulcrum 24/20s on the Roubaix (full Alex 32s on the Sirrus). Riding with quality stuff to begin with (mostly original Specialized/Shimano equipment). Is it just because of good components there have been no major issues or am I just lucky?

I got to a 360 1 rep max at one point, and at my strongest I was repping starting at 315 and going up to 335 then back down. I mention this because my body is a body type that puts on muscle quickly, and when it came to strength I was rapidly hitting the top end of my ability. Perhaps in a stroke of good fortune, I had a knee injury, and to rehab that I took up biking. I LOVE it. I've been on the bike since 2006, and I live in PA. I have racked up over 13000 miles since starting, I ride to work every day, I am as fit as I've ever been.

Where is all this going? Well, I weigh in at 263 right now. I have gotten as low as 229, and I am planning to get back down as I want to compete this year in several tri's (did my first Duathlon last year and loved it). Having a metabolism that puts on muscle easily also means I can put on fat easily as well. When I first got on a bike I was 290, and my resting heart rate was over 100, now even being back up to 263, my resting heart rate is in the 50's.

I bike because I love it. I bike because it makes me feel good. I bike because I'm an addict. And I'm a Clyde largely due to genetics, and I have a sweet tooth that conspires to undo me as well, but it doesn't make me less competitive, no less than when I was under 360lbs pressing it to the sky for no reason other than just beating that weight.

At 6-5", I cannot avoid the Clydesdale moniker. I've never seen a Clydesdale horse who is fat, and I am not fat either. It is a rare person who would ever see me and call me fat. I don't think I've ever heard that word used to describe me in all my 30 + years of standing 6-5".

So if it is 6'0" OR 200 lbs, I am a Clydesdale. But I ain't fat!

No, you're a workhorse.

I'm 5'7 and currently weigh 198lb, down from a max weight of around 238 2 years ago. That was why I had to check the standard for Athenas, as I didn't want to be posting under false pretenses. I had lost a little the first year, then kicked into high gear (literally) in December after being diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes. My cyclist husband (he's more in the mustang class, and also diabetic) set me up with an indoor trainer, and later a better flat-bar road/hybrid bike.

My weight loss has stalled out, mostly because I haven't been meticulously logging every meal and snack on MyFitnessPal. I've been careful, just taking some time off from being obsessive.

Over the winter, we were eating a lot of roasted vegetables - more vegetables than I EVER ate before - and substituting them for carbs in meals. Since the weather got better, we've not been as careful to cook veggies at home, though we often substitute them to replace carbs at restaurants. Maybe when the weather changes we'll get back to the winter menu plan.

*Necro-ing this thread so that some of the new folks who might be Clydes and Athenas can find it. I had to look around to check my Athena cred. A buck fitty pounds on me looks pretty awesome, and it's actually under my target weight as discussed with my doctor.

*necro: revive a dead thread or old topic, sometimes years after the last post.

I kinda have a problem with the Athena 150 lb designation (as long as we are necro-ing)... not that I can do anything about it but you would you would think that designation is for women who are technically obese but for me, 150 would actually be a bit underweight. And since BMI knows no gender limits (which is another topic of discussion -- it probably SHOULD), then I just feel like by saying women over 150 pounds is considered "large" is, well, a bit sexist and sets an unrealistic standard for many women. But hey, I realize the name or the weight designations didn't come from this group... just been a bit of a pet peeve of mine. Even if I lose every single pound that I want and need to, I will always be an Athena even at my ideal weight... Just my 2 cents worth.

Cheers.

ETA @ Ginny -- congratulations on your weight loss!

I just found this forum and this site while researching a Fuji Sportif from performance bike. im now 31 about to be 32, height is 6'5 and at my biggest I was 395 doing bodyguard and security work, thru diet alone via paleo method ive dropped 80lbs now down to 315, and now im starting cycling to drop under 300 (my first short term goal ) so that I can reach 100lbs dropped, and recently had my BF% measured and is currently 26.2% , which im also going to work on. I chose cycling since its easier on the joints than other cardio

I'm in the same boat as a Clydesdale. At my ideal weight, I'll still be a Clydesdale and even at quite a bit under ideal, I'll still be a Clydesdale. I don't mind though. And yes, BMI is a ridiculous thing. I wish the life insurance industry would stop using it.

Hey rawly

I don't think you should be down on yourself, I'm 6'4", 320 lbs. and wear a size 15EE shoe at age 63. At age 50, I wore a size 14 D, but then again at age 11 I wore a men's size 9 shoe. I don't hate to be messed with, I'm not messed with at least face to face. I've been married 42 years now and while my wife is maybe my better half, I'm definitely her bigger half! And, I'm proud that I'm known in several circles as Bigfoot. ;-P

Would have used Bigfoot as my user name here at BF if it'd been available. Us Bigfoots at BF should celebrate it. After all,, we have to become pros at finding bikes and pedals and gear that suit our needs. And your growing two inches after age 50 is really something that few others can claim. 8-)

I first heard the term Clydesdale applied to me about 15 years ago as a runner. Now I wasn't much of a runner, usually 5 Ks with two of my many brothers. One was about 225, like me, but he could run like a deer. The other, the skinny one, was a plodder like me, who would lag behind me and then at the last moment, sprint past me at the finish line. The antidote to that was to hide from him and stay ahead. Beat his a$$, I did.

At about the same time, I was attending the Piper's Gathering on North Hero Island in Lake Champlain, VT, and this is where the Lippizaner stallions used to summer. These are magnificent, large animals, but not as large as the Clydesdales. They are also known as the "Dancing Horses," because that is what they are trained to do. Now I think of myself as a Lippizan as I continue to lose weight!

My name is Gerry and I live in Houston... 5' 9" and 265 lbs. I learned the term Clydesdale when I entered the forum a few days ago to search for remedies for spokes breaking in my rear wheel (strange huh?... ). I am 62 and now semi-retired, I started riding regularly and breaking spokes regularly. I ride a Trek Verve 2, the LBS already replaced the stock rear wheel (Bontrager AT550) with a (Weinmann?) ZAC 19.

My doctor had classified me as a pre-hypertensive and pre-diabetic. In the last visit, he set 'forget the pre-diabetic, it's gone, and I don't care about your elevated blood pressure... Just keep riding...'

Glad to be here!
