Help with injury recovery

So I'm just getting back in to cycling to augment my fitness regime, and yesterday I break my foot and will be in a boot for 6 weeks.

Any suggestions to maintain my fitness level or at least minimize the loss of fitness over that time? I may try to start swimming in a couple of weeks and see if I can just avoid pushing off with that foot. And I'm sure I'll be able to do some core work in time too.

Any ideas for diet beyond the obvious?

Anyone ever dealt with this issue before, and how did you deal with it?

Any input is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

John

eliminate all beverages except for water for the next couple of weeks while you really can't use your foot at all. COMPLETELY eliminate alcohol. Your body metabolizes the most toxic substance first, therefore it metabolizes alcohol before fat. Hit the gym and focus on all upper body exercises, preferably with freeweights to maximize muscle fiber recruitment.

I don't know anything about this subject except that people tend to eat when they're bored or stressed, so make sure you have something fun to do that keeps your hands busy, and if it takes you outside, then that's even better.

Hope you're feeling better soon!

I broke my foot about 4 years ago, depending on where you broke it, you might be able to ride a recumbent exercise bike once you are able to bear some weight with the cast. For example I might have been able to ride with my heel on the pedal--with an ok from my Dr.--because I broke my foot on the outside bone just up from the pinky toe. The crutches sucked, but my upper body strength was fantastic then.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. Good point about the alcohol. I may try a recumbent bike at some point when my foot feels like it can take it, and with my Dr's OK. I've actually broken this bone before about 3/4 inch behind where it's broken this time and it seems to hurt more this time. Though maybe that's just b/c I'm older now, who knows. Thanks again.

Ask you Dr. about swimming start now if ok, just use a pull buoy the whole time. It puts you in the right horizontal position, you will only be using upper body, and will keep your cardio capacity up. Swimming is a great exercise. You can also spend time working on strength training.

I think you will find that being on crutches provides plenty upper body workout... I looked like popeye after 14 weeks on those bad boys. Ruptured my Lisfranc tendon... 3 surgeries, the last one to install a plate and now all is well again.

Good luck, foot injuries really suck.

No crutches at this point. I hate the things anyway. Swimming sounds good if doc says it's ok. I suppose I can work on stretching and core as well. I'm just sick about being out of my routine for 6 weeks.
