Geeze! The stuff we deal with here! From a hot weekend into the cold on the following weekend. Lastweek dealing with layers and windbreakers to this week, a hot ride. Same hot ride it gets cold as we approach the coast?! Gah! Make up your mind Mother Nature! You are causing us confusion!

This week, hot and shweatty! Confusing from one week to the next!

How do you ride with so much stuff on? I'd get soaked, even when I'm riding at the dead of night, in the middle of the winter, I feel like I need to take my shirt off.

So what passes for "cold" out there on the west coast? Looks pretty nice, based on your pictures (even where you're bundled up).

By way of comparison, the metric century I was going to ride this morning was postponed to next week, because it's snowing up on the mountain we'd be climbing.

I'm not a big sweater/dripper. My face and head will shweat under the helmet but I need bright sunlight. As long as I'm moving with a slight breeze, I'm dry. If I stop in the direct sunlight, I'll get wet. In the winter, I one can't tell that I'm sweating. My bod under the jacket will get a little damp but not much.

I have bud that will drip buckets even when the temps are in the 60's.

Anything around 60 is cool. I don't really need tights a those temps but I've read to many times protecting the knees from the cold is good thing. This was the first cool ride in some time so after reading the forecast, we thought it was going to be cooler. This day we could have gone without the windbreakers and tights.

60 and under is cool for us two. In the 50's, I'd use the covers. Yup, your temps are way cold for us but again, we aren't used to those temps.

Once did a ride up the mtns with an unexpected rain. A 20 mile descent in 30 degree temps, soaking wet with only a long sleeve t-shirt and shorts, I thought I was going to die! Wind chill factor @16 mph was murder. Usually hit 30-40 on the descent but anything over 16 was too much. That's the coldest I've ever beenona bike. SOmeone said with althe factors, maybe I felt what they would estimate a 15 degree feeling. I don't know how you guys do it!

It's all in what you're used to.

My sister-in-law and her family moved to southern Arizona from Massachusetts about 12 years ago, and now when they come home in the summer, they're bundled up because temps in the 80's are too cool for them.

I'm not cryin for you either Beanz. You need to ride in the wonderful puget sound fall weather. Forty degrees and rain. Fifty if it's nice out. At least my studded tires are still hangin in the garage. Won't be getting any morning black ice for at least a month. Hopefuly two.

No kidding. I came back to Bremerton in the fall after 6 months of school in Hawaii back in the Navy days. My bike almost refused to come out of the bike bag.

Oddly, North Texas has been trying to emulate the Pac NW of late.

In the mornings I've been wearing a light wool baselayer and a shortie summer wool jersey over top, and knickers to keep my knees warm. It hasn't been cold enough yet to need shoe covers, etc. except for one morning when it was 31 degrees.

Hey, Beanz - for any kind of fall-through-spring climbing around here the randos all bring wool gloves and hats, and at least some arm/leg warmers if not a full on pair of tights and a light fleece jacket. Although we only climb to 4000' for many of our highest climbs, there can still be snow walls up on the passes in April and early May. No sun and riding through was equates to a walk-in fridge gets pretty chilly!
Lotsa wool layers: That's how I do it.

So I guess if you want to race Mr. Beanz, you have to take him to the rain and sub 45 degrees to have a chance.

Make that 30, and soaking wet! Last time I did a 10,000 ft century, It was about 50 and raining, fog and lots of big rig traffic. I thought I did ok!..Really though, I'm not fast, just consistent!

Well at 30 there would be no benefit, 30 is just cold.
