Hey guys. new guy here.

Well here i am and just hit 30. my weight has sky rocketed to about 340 and i know now that i need to do something. i cant continue this trend or i wont make it to 40. i have always been a big guy but not like this. all the years of working and eating fast food and sitting around saying i will start tomorrow has caught up to me. so tomorrow is here and i am looking around on craigslist to pick up a bike to get started on. i have found a few so let me know what you guys think of them
Trek 930 Single Track
Cannondale M900
Cannondale M300 Cadi2
GT Palomar
Gary Fisher Big Sur

are a few that on on there. anything you guys think i should stay away from? to start i am going to be riding it to the gym and back(about 5 miles round trip). thanks for any help you can give me. i can tell i have some reading to do.
Travis

Welcome Travis, all your listed bike brands seem good. It's not easy to find a bad name brand bike these days. The M900s were (are) nice, not as familiar with the others

Are these all your size? Do you know your size? Fit is the most important thing, followed closely by mechanical condition. There probably isn't a huge difference in the components of these machines. Do test rides if possible and pick the one that feels the best.

Welcome! I'm not familar with those bikes personally (I'm pretty new here myself), but I'm sure through searching here (and some other places) you'll end up learning so much about what works best for you. Good luck!

I'm not sure what those bikes are.

But at 340 lbs, I highly recommend you stick to Mountain Bikes or better yet a stationary bike first to get your weight down to under 300 lbs. I do not believe any aluminum bike can withstand anything over 300 lbs. for long.

Umm, not so much. I know it may sound a bit counter intuitive, but just about any aluminum frame would work so long as the wheels were set up properly. We have members here who started riding well North of 400 lbs.

That being said, a hard tail (non suspension) moutain bike is a tried and true starter bike. As mentioned before, fit is the most important thing since you don't want to damage your knees or learn to hate the bike due to being uncomfortable.

Welcome to the herd Truss!
