I use Garmin Forerunner 405 with a heartrate monitor and a bike sensor. The watch uses GPS to track your ride and then you upload it wirelessly to your computer which then uploads your data to a website (https://connect.garmin.com) which is a very cool website! On the website you can view your trip on Google Maps, and you can review your ride (heartrate, speed, elevation, cadence, distance and more).

mapmyride.com is easy to use and will calculate average speed, calories burned, miles per month and if you ride the same routes frequently adding a workout is simple once you input all your routes. i have been using this for about a month and it is really cool, and best of all costs nothing.

I have a Garmin and just use thier programme. I also have an exercise diary and every ride is entered in it. I track time, distance, avg speeed and HR. I love this as I can go back three years, that's how long I've been riding, and see the difference. I really recommend using a book and pen, good old fashioned and it will never crash.

I use a Garmin Edge 305 bike computer with heart rate monitor and cadence sensor. The Garmin Forerunner and Edge devices come with Garmin Training Center software. I upload the data after every ride. It shows me speed, cadence, heart rate, averages of all these, and many other things. I also upload my data to the Garmin Connect website. I have also downloaded SportTracks from Zone Five software. It is shareware and I like it much better than the Garmin software. They all allow me to see where I have been on a map. Check out www.garmin.com.
If all you want to track is speed and distance, there are other bike computers available that will do that and are cheaper than the Garmin units. I'm sure others will have some suggestions.

It still is free but free membership entries have been limited as to what you can enter. 4 columns of info!...paid memberships get as more columns taht I can think of
I've alway paid anyways, but 5 years of info stored there. I can look back at any time by pushing a button.

Happened across a mention of this (https://bimlog.com/ba/ui/ba.php) in a post yesterday. Pretty amazing way to use a GPS phone to calculate details of your rides.

my cycling computer covers time and distance and this website covers calorie conversion. it might not track my route, but thats not something i particularly care about anyway. though i suppose you could always look at street signs and use a map and a highlighter when you get home...
