Monday Morn MTB ride pics
This is what an MTB is made for, climbingin the dirt. Ended up at a max of 4000 ft. Lots of steep sections, some 22%, maybe more. Same course as a couple weeks ago but higher and further into the mountain.
Ride partner riding up what is known as "The Pain Divide"..that's not the top, another false summit!
I was feeling it today but still managed a thumbs up!
What's an MTB ride without a nail in the tire. Parnter's brand new tubless tire!
Up ahead, Doris (in her 60's) highly decorated MTB rider and author doing these monster climbs
Ride partner, our cars are down there somewhere!
Now I know Gina had her feet up on yesterday's tandem ride cause I was BUSHED today!
Came from down that trail. Center towards the right, you can see the big white golfball shaped radar dome I posted last time. It was a tough climb today!

Nice ride and pix. For some strange reason I also enjoy climbing mountains (although yours look way higher then anything we have around here), gives me a sense of accomplishment and totally kicks your arse at the same time. Plus it does wonders for your road riding stamina as well. Thanks for sharing, gives me some motivation to get off me duff and ride more.

Nice pics, looks like a fun area with good climbs. I really don't see you on singletrack at all, not much in your area?

I'm more into MTB for the climbing. The single track courses I've been on are 10 minute climbs then some bouncing around and sharp turns. The course we rode is 2 hours of stright climbing with 22% grades. I'm not a very technical rider so coming down these hills with big ruts and rocks in the steepest sections are technical enough to me so that I don't miss the single track.

Profile from the MTB ride yesterday. Garmin says there is a 26% grade somewhere near the 8.2 mile.
I haven't been on many singletracks but the ones I've been on didn't off this much climbing fun!.

A lot of people who only ride on the road (or the MUP) don't understand the "attraction" of mtn biking. The fact that mtn biking is almost entirely about climbing isn't the most advertised part of the the ad campaign.
I'm a roadie. I will usually prefer to ride on the road if given the choice. Yet I ride weekly off road because Mtn biking is strength, cardio, and pulmunary training all rolled up in a long, sweaty, gasping, heart pounding hill of ruts, bumps, dust, and gnat swarms. With a sip of water at the top before turning around and heading down and home. There is NOTHING that compares to this that I can do on my road bike.
Road biking = solitary miles and distance.
Mtn biking = battling the elements with a shout of triumph at the end.

Have you done any of the local climbing rides? Ride Around the Bear, Mullholland, Breathless Agony? Minus the ruts, I get just as much of a kick out of these rides ad MTB'ing and do feel it involves many of the factors you mention.
Do you enjoy the downhill? Honestly, when I do a climbing ride, I wouldn't mind if they sent a helicopter to pick me up! I get my thrill going up! Downhill, not a challenge. I figure anybody can do it, just a little more cautiously on the MTB!
I've done The Bear 4 times and Breathless once. Everytime I get to Onyx summit (8400 ft), I'm wondering where my helicopter is!

That ride looks awesome!
The MTB guys around here seem way into riding knarly, rock and stump strewn single-track in the dark. Plenty of climbing too, but in 3 attempts I've found myself to busy falling or crapping my pants to go real hard.
I could really appreciate an bit clearer trail like that... looks freggin steep though!!!!

There are other trails that head down to Yorba Linda and otehr places but I'm not that familiar with the trails. It was my first time up to this point and second time on this trail.
We did another ride to White Saddle about a month ago, in Monrovia. Nice quiet trail but first couple miles was paved. That was nice but nothing around.

Skyline in Corona......91 fwy, just west of the 15, exit Main St. South to Foothill Pwky, west (right to the end of the road, then two lefts on small streets, can't miss it. Houses under construction type area at the start.

And Ha! White Saddle! That is basically the nearest trail to me. If I am not on my other climb (Chantry), I am usually going up into Monrovia Canyon. I have been up to White Saddle countless times. You are right, very desolate up there, but one of the reasons I like it. You know that connects with Red Box/Rincon. that is some epic riding up there.

Hehe, I don't know lots of the trails. My bud is taking me to places I don't know. The day we rode WS, we were pressed for time so only hit WS. The Corona hills, no time limits so we did a longer ride.
I'm more of a roadie so I hit the trails when someone takes me and points me inthe right direction so I don't get lost!

My road rides on the weekends (non commute type) average around 70-80 miles each. I live in Ventura county and there are lots of hills here to climb (Mulholland, Encinal, Tuna, sea to summit on Hwy 33, etc) and lots of long stretches of just stroking with my mind turned off (in the zone).
But, honestly, nothing really compares to attacking a hill on a mtn bike for a 2 hour climb that only covers 12-15 miles. Then returning the next week to see if you can beat your best time by another 5-10 seconds. The gasping for air - ANY air, the screaming muscles in your legs arms & back, the frenzied heartrate you can hear over your labored breathing, the sweat dripping off your nose and burning in your eyes. . . it all adds up when you think back and remember the ride and realize that you challenged adversity and were good enough/strong enough to not quit.
Don't get me wrong, I LOVE my road bike. I ride it every chance I get and will choose it over my mtn bike most of the time (99.9%). But the memories of the off road rides are stronger and more emotionally complete while draining at the same time. I think it is the "fight" that makes it that way.
