I notice this has turned into a "how much you weigh" thread, and I can understand that. But I was wondering about the other aspect of the OP's post. For your weight as it is, what is your attitude towards climbing?

I'm 5'9" and weigh 180 lbs. I'm a guest here in the Clydesdale section. I thought I was going to be a bonafide member when my weight hit 188, my highest ever, but it's headed back down now.

6'6" 245lbs

Down from 320 about 3 years ago. I'm not thrilled with hills but getting better at them. (Just keep spinning, right?) Did a hilly 75 miles about a month ago at an average of 14.7 mph. Never been so tired or sore in my life but made it and I was beaming from ear to ear. Planning a two day double century ride, (S)eattle (T)o (P)ortland, next July and hope to be down in the 220 - 230 range for that. Going to be tough though as I won't have been that light since I was 20, some 47 years ago. And having only a 32" inseam, most of my height and weight is from my waist on up.

Still stuck at the 225 plateau... which isn't bad considering I've been eating a whole lot recently. The Girl loves to cook, and we're getting on into "Holiday Food" time. Pumpkin bread, 7 grain pilaf stuffed squash, roasts... If I can hold steady at 225 through the new year, it will be a heck of an accomplishment.

Sharkey, you sound slim. Hills may always be a challenge because of your overall size, even when you're not carrying any excess. An average of 14.7 sounds excellent. It's about all I can do on a weekend ride, and I'm much smaller than you.

I would recommend NOT aiming for the weight you had at age 20. You've gained bone and cartilage since then, and if you weighed the same, it would mean you're missing some essential fat and muscle.

I'm Sharkey's height and recently down to 225 from 260-ish. Unless he's packing a lot of muscle mass, 220 isn't an unreasonable weight at 6'6". I'm almost there, and I can attest to the fact that I've got well over 5 more pounds to lose around the middle before I'm back in the "slim" category. He does, however, have a few years on me, so I'm not familiar with cartilege etc. like you mentioned.

Personally, I'm aiming for the 205 mark by springtime.

Sharkey - you should have no problems with the STP ride as back-to-back centuries even at 245 if you're used to spending long hours in the saddle. There's no really harsh climbing to speak of. A 1 mile, 5 - 6% grade at one point, and some light rollers from mile 100 to 150-ish. There's a short, steep climb coming off Rt 30 into Portland around mile 197. I was 240-ish last year when I did it as a 1-Day double.

Thanks for the encouraging words. And... Oh yes, I'm sure hills will always be a challenge. But at least when going down them, there seems to be a bit of a plus for us "big'ns". And I agree that 220 might be a bit of a stretch. But I definitely have some NON-essential fat around my belly that could be done away with. And to your point, my thighs and calves are definitely bulking up. And muscle mass being denser and heavier than fat it will be a struggle. But I'm not too fixated on the number of lbs as long as things like heart, respiration, and endurance are in order.

Turbo, I'm not particularly muscular so maybe I'll make it, maybe I won't, in terms of getting down to 220. But I'm impressed that you're one of the riders that did STP in one day. As I talk to people that have done the ride and they tell me about the lack of any serious hills, I'm more and more confident that I'll be able to do it. I haven't set a future goal of a one day STP challenge at this point but it is creeping into the more sadistic corners of my brain as a possibility for 2011.

Our house is sited a few hundred feet from a small brook that runs through the city, running diagonally under the streets. From our house we have just a short downhill to the bridge in one direction, and the rest is all uphill in all three other directions. On my daily ride I don't have much choice but to climb hills. to the east it's a gentle climb of about 5' in 500' to the next street. To the north it's about 15' in 600'. West is about 20' in 300', and south is down about 8' in 300' to the bridge then up 30' in 200'. So essentially, I climb every day.

There are days that I have to use the lowest gear on the bike and slog my way up, and there are days that I use the middle chainring and the largest cog. Believe me, towing my home built trailer around town does get to be a chore at times. Missouri isn't flat by any stretch, so every ride involves hill climbing, just a choice at to how steep a hill to climb.

At my size, it gets to be a real chore, pedaling 350+# of rider, trailer & cargo.

I am 6'5" and 212 lbs., down from 345 lbs. at the beginning of the year. Not much in the way of hills around where I live, but the ones we have have definitely gotten easier as I've lost weight and built up my leg muscles over the course of the year! Now, to get a lighter bike....

5'9" 210-215 No hills to speak of here in Illinois but I have done some mountain biking in Nevada and Utah. Was able to climb most everything with exception to a few section of Slickrock which are insanely steep. I have ridden a hilly century and the Red Rock Canyon loop near Las Vegas on a singlespeed.

There was a time when I used to look for hills to climb in my area and then take the most difficult lines to the top and accelerate when cresting the climb and push onward until my heart rate evened out again. I would seek out difficult creek crossings, logovers that exceeded my BB height........but I digress.........not so much anymore though, as I seem to be going through a burnout period of some sort. Hopefully that "fire in the belly" will return again soon.

I'm 5'5", female, and somewhere between 180-190lb depending on the time of the month and year. I loathe climbing with a passion. But I ride an old steel 3-speed...

6'4", 230 pounds...down from a peak of ~ 250. I enjoy climbing. Here in the Raleigh area we have rolling hills, with flats to the East and mountains to the West. I much prefer the changing scenery and pace of the hills / mountains to the flats. I'm not the fastest guy going up the hills, but am the fastest going down them :-)

I'll answer this although right now I hate myself because of the answer. 6'1" 235. I did so good all year was down to 210 start of august then blame holidays, followed by more holidays, then hunting season, friend flew me out to Alberta for two weeks of hunting which also turned into a lot of whiskey and take out on the road, got back and almost fell over when I saw 235lbs. Then my wife ends up in hospital with a kidney blockage and as I'm an emotional eater...well you get the idea. Oh well back on the horse of loosing weight. And by the way I love climbing, love it.

I'm 5'8, 264 lbs now...closer to 255 when I'm riding a lot. I like to climb as long as the grades < 6%. I start to suffer when they get above that. I have a 3 mile climb near my apt where the first half is 8-12% and the second half is 3-6%. I can't make it all the way without stopping to rest but that's my goal. Should be doable around 235 lbs.

6'2 go about 280 now, I hate climbing, but no matter which direction I leave from my house there's going to be a climb. It may take me longer but I do them all when they get in the way.

5'10" and 265, down from 396 LBS about 14 months ago. Have learned to love the hills, but only if I get downhill as a reward. Of course, my house is on a plateau in the middle of the city, so I always have to climb (itty bitty as they are) with no downhill to get home.

6'2"/238, down from a high of 265 abt 2 years ago. I took up riding again last spring after 40 years and +70 pounds. Hills are like an illegal drug for me. I hate them and fear them, yet I'm drawn to them like a moth to flame. One of my goals after I started riding again was the Torrey Pines hill, about 8 miles from where I live. Finally did it a couple of months ago, and it wasn't as horrific as I thought. Actually wasn't bad at all... Until I got passed by a guy that looked like he was about 80 years old on a recumbent! (He flew by me again on the downhill! Damn!) The downhill was scarier than the climb. 40 mph with the cliff beside you is a bit unnerving!

The next goal is to ride the Gran Fondo Colnago 50 miler (starts in San Diego's Little Italy) in March, then the Engineer Road climb outside of Julian, CA by next summer. Weight goal is 200# and a 36" waist.

Just about 6'3", 222. Can't seem to stop the endless increase. I was 215 about two years ago, 208 four years ago... The lightest I ever weighed was 165, but it wasn't a really healthy weight for me... just didn't eat much at all and drank beer and rode my bike... not something to dwell on, and it was 11 years ago.
