    Garmin Edge 500

Anyone have one of these? I was thinking of picking up a heart rate monitor for cycling and have also been eyeing this to replace my Cateye computer. Does anyone have experience with this? They have two versions--one that takes cadence and heart rate, and one that does not.

The Edge 500 is a brand new unit. Was supposed to be out bye Christmas, but I don't know if it made it to market by then or not. I use an Edge 305 with HR monitor and cadence. I really like it. The 500 also has temperature and, I believe, will pair with an ANT compatible power monitor. You can probably Google Edge 500 and find a few reviews. Since it's only been out a month or so there won't be a lot of long term information. All the reviews I've read have been positive.

I've had one for 3 weeks now. It works fine. Has the same screen as the 305 but with smaller overall size, longer battery life ability to receive Ant+ (PowerTap/SRM/etc) data and less cost. On the negative side, it does not allow the rudimentary mapping functions or the training functions of the 305. I used neither of these when I had my 305. HRM and Cadence/Speed Sensors can be purchased separately if you don't get the whole package.

I have used it on 5 rides now, so it's not a lot of experience with it yet, but I've had no trouble with it.

There is a bug in the download software so if you want to load data into something other than Garmin Connect, (Sport Tracks, MapMyRide, etc.) you need to FIRST load to Garmin Connect then download the .tcx file. Garmin says this will be corrected "Real Soon Now".

overall I'd give it a solid thumbs up and would buy it again.

Awesome. Thanks. I just picked up the one without the cadence/speed and heart rate sensor. Apparently, it's cheaper to buy it without, then buy it individually. Plus, you can upgrade the heart rate sensor.

Anyone Clyde here with a bigger chest (mine is 49), have trouble fitting one of those sensors?

I've thought about a Garmin but I don't ride enough to appreciate one.

@Mr. Beanz: I don't know if I ride enough, either, to appreciate the GPS portion, but the fact that it also does the heart rate (and it can be used off a bike) is a large selling point. Not to mention, it's pretty geeky--and I'm all about that.

QUOTE=d4c4c8;10295811]ROFLMAO!!! Beanz not riding enough... that one pegged my sarcastometer.[/QUOTE]

Actually when it came down to it, Gina suggested that I go Garmin. I redirected the dough towards the purchase of the FLip and a Canon Digital camera. I have more fun with the pics/vids than I do watching my hr or cadence on a climb...I have had cadence in the past but once I know my range, hmmm! I ended up taking off a fancy shmancy copmuter and replaced it with the original $14 special I previously had on for simplicity. Fancy one had a counter for every pedal revolution on the ride, after a few thousand, I'd lose interest.

One thing I like is the graphs but I can look them up on geoladdersdotcom and copy them as other riders post them all the time....Or I tell my Garmin ride partners to send me a copy of the graph. Most like their pictures touched up before I post them on the forums. So, whether I post their pics with a big zit on their nose or the nice smooth satinlike complexion pic, it ups to them!..Most like the smoothpics!

I have my own built in HR monitor. If I'm doing a 5000-10000 ft climb, something in my chest will say, "ow that hurts, slow down!"

^ Most definitely the best resource on the Edge 500 around. I use dcrainmaker's review as my owners manual.

SP, you made a good choice. I love the 500 and upgraded from a Cateye (Strada Wireless) that I loved and gave to my son, also an avid cyclist. As far as the "bug" that doesn't allow it to be used with Sport Tracks, Map My Ride, Ascent, etc., my understanding is the problem occurs due to it using a different file format (.fit files) that those writing such software are yet to get up to speed on or haven't been provided the API to begin to program for.

Supposedly, Garmin will add the training functionality in a future firmware update.

It's awesome. Though I received it last night, I had to put a mile or two on it just so I can play with it. It picks up satellites very quickly--even indoor by a window.

I have it side by side with my Cateye Cadence in that picture. It's not as large as I thought. I like having three screens with selectable information on each one. I read the same thing about the training functionality in a future firmware update.

Quit yer freakin whinin! Hey, how do you download those charts. I'v got the 305 for Christmas and can't figure out how to post my elevation chart you post.

BTW, the 305 is working well for me. It survived an endo over the weekend.

Most ride parnters have Garmins so they will send me a copy of the graph. I load it into a flickr or photobucket online album then post it as I would a picture.

The garmin dudes use the garmin website to do the graphs. I was told Garmin has a site and link supplied when you purchase the unit, maybe in the pamphlet somewhere?

The dude that sends me the charts is codename "eyemage". Send him a pm, he's pretty good at the geek stuff, maps, graphs. Heck, if I ask for directions to a ride, it's like he's got a map and blow up pictures within 2 or 3 minutes.

The website that the Garmin's use is http://connect.garmin.com/.

Here's a screenshot of the site from a quick test ride I did with it last night.

This is the one "eyemage" made for one of our mtbrides. Looks a bit different but I dunno, you'd have to axe the guy.

I can't figure out how to load to Garmin, I was able to get SportTracks. The chart is pathetic.

Sorry for butting in here - but I must comment on the Edge 500...
I got one a few weeks ago (just the unit - purchased the cadence/speed sensor seperately) and have loved since riding with it. I use it to record my rides, so I can track my personal progress of time v. speed v. grade/elevation... it took some refitting to get rid of the glare when i mounted it to my stem - but on the handlebars now - it views perfect. the selectabel data fields is an awesome feature. The cadence/speed sensor took some tweaking to record each ride - had to lean the unit out towards the crankarm then readjust the speed pickup arm... but it works awesome now. i ride a road bike - and each day i'm out on a ride on my lunch hour in valley forge park... thanks for listening. -fred

    @hockeyfulm
I hear you on the glare issue.

My solution for that is to have the computer on a separate computer mount.

The technology on the bike has added to the fun...if that's even possible. It's pretty cool to see what gets the heart pumping and then what my resting heart rate is.

    @Daspydyr
We'd both have to run for president of the techno weenie club. I've got a few nerdy techno experience under the belt.

    What comes in the box

I put up some photos on Flickr.

In the box. Ready to open.

All of the goodies (minus the heart rate monitor and the speed/cadence sensor--purchased separately. Notice that you can charge this sucker all over the US and Europe!

It actually comes with two bike mounts!!
