Longer rides

I rode my age this past weekend for my birthday - 56 miles (plus a few more to grow on)!

I enjoyed the ride a lot even though the wind averaged 20-25MPH. However, even though I wore good biking shorts, I ended up with a very chafed bottom. I guess my 250lbs were not supported well enough by my bike's relatively small seat. I have had no similar issues during shorter rides of 15-20 miles.

So, what suggestions are there to avoid/minimize such chafing when riding longer distances?

Were you wearing the bike shorts without underwear? Never wear undies with your bike shorts! The seams will chew your flesh like
piranhas.

You can try Chamois Butt'r or other goop that's good to smear over your particulars.

Also, check your saddle positioning in case it's not level enough and putting pressure in the wrong places.

I refuse to pay $15 fora small container of butter at the bike hsops!

I pick up Udder Cream, plastic container cream in a tube with a cow patch/spotted container at Walmart. $1 for a samll tube, $5 small tub at some markets (Ralph's). Also use Queen Helene body butter from Walmart 4 or 5 bucks for a small tub container for $5.

Small tube is cool cause easily carried on looong rides and re-applied mid ride.

Udder cream is good, but breaks down when you sweat a lot. I've started mixing up my own chamois cream for long distances (I'm talking about upwards of 400km in a day).

1c udder cream
1T petroleum jelly
1/2t aloe vera gel
1/2t witch hazel
10 drops menthol oil

It's about the closest approximation to Assos chamois cream I can formulate, right down to that oh-so-famous "tingle" that lets you know it's working.
I keep a 4oz squeeze bottle of it in my handlebar bag for reapplication during long rides, about once every 50 miles on a cold weather ride, or almost every rest stop if I'm really sweating up a storm.

I haved used all the creams, tried all the cheap alternatives and the only one that works for me is the Assos or DzNutz. Yes it's not cheap but luckally for me I hardly ever need it. Keep the affected area clean and never wear your riding shorts with underware and never more than once without washing. I suffered with this for a long time till I got some advice from an old pro I ride with but I,m not going there on a public forum. Lets just say it involves a razor and loss of pride.

it might be the saddle. if you are on the heavy side you might be using a comfort saddle. and if you're riding a road bike with drop bars the wide area may be hitting your thighs. I switched to a road saddle and my chaffing went away. I also wear proper (expensive) bike shorts against my skin. I can ride with creams but do occasionally use a product I got from CVS. she butter mixed with petroleum gelly. I don't use it to fight shaffing though I use is just at the crease of my legs.

I'll venture a guess and say that there's probably one that you haven't tried. It's called Lantiseptic, and I hadn't heard about it until I started hanging out on the LD forum. It's an antibiotic protective ointment mostly used in gerontology, but because of the viscosity and antibiotic properties it's a favourite among LD riders doing 600 - 1400km events.
I searched high and low for the stuff locally (their website lists about 5 local retail chains which are claimed to stock it) and no one had even heard of the stuff. I ended up ordering it online.

I go without cream, I don't like the wet diaper feeling (not that I remember).

I use cycling shorts with a small pad and a Brooks saddle. I had some minor chafing on a few rides, but after my third century my skin had strengthened.

I now can ride 200k over 8 hours without a problem.

I have used plain old vaseline and it seems to work fine for me. But others may have more sensitive skin.

Lantiseptic isn't something I've heard of anybody using on a routine basis. It's really one of those things that's reserved for when you're spending more then 24hrs in the saddle.

The only concern with plain petroleum jelly is if you ride a leather saddle. Eventually, you'll sweat and some of that stuff will get soaked into the leather, which is actually pretty bad for it if you're doing that on a consistent basis. That's why I only use a little bit of petrolatum to add some viscosity to the udder cream base in my homebrew chamois cream concoction, and I only use it on long (200k+) rides.

But, but, but, but the OP is talking a 50'ish mile ride. So you are saying it will be fine on special event 50 milers since we aren't talking 600-1400k rides?

OK, special for Mr. Beanz (since he wants to be difficult today )...
If 50 miles is your once or twice a summer "long" ride and you feel you need something as hardcore as Lantiseptic (which I only mentioned in response to youcoming saying he'd tried all the creams), then go for it.
If 50 miles is a warm up, or a good hill ride (as it is so often for someone of The Mighty Mr. Beanz' cycling prowess), then you're probably not going to be reaching for the Lantiseptic.

Of course, I may have to switch to Preparation-H if Mr. Beanz wants to keep being a pain in the butt.

I switched to a Selle An-atomica saddle and stopped using cream. No problems for me up to 50-60 miles. I'll know Saturday how things go at 100 miles. The SA saddle is heavy and not cheap, but for me it was worth it.

Bike shorts should be snug like a second skin. If they move, they'll chafe. Stand up once in a while on the pedals to help with moisture buildup.

I actually used prep H this summer when I was on vacation and got a saddle sore, worked great then at night I used tea tree oil to help clear it up
