Hey all. First time poster here.
I recently started dieting and after some success I wanted to really get the ball rolling.
I've considered buying a bike for some time, but even after a bit of success, I am still 380lbs, and the idea of completely wrecking an expensive frame or something has always held me back.
Maybe you good people here might have some suggestions. I don't have a very big budget unfortunately, and the bike has to consistently lug around 380 lbs without wanting to collapse. Does such a bike even exist?

No, not too Clyde...it just means you have to look around more carefully. A hardtail mountain bike should work. You may have to spring for new wheels with a higher spoke count. If you have the cash, I would definitely look at the Rivendell Bombadil. I wish I had that much cash. Another option would be a touring bike.

Before people chime in w/ the usual recommendations, I'm gonna suggest taking a look at Worksman. They're made in America and like the name says, they're work bikes, although they do build recreational bikes too.
I bought a Trek 7200 when I was still around 390ish. It's worked fine for me ever since. I never felt like it was going to collapse under me and the wheels are still the proper shape. Note: I wouldn't attempt jumping off of curbs with it, but for regular daily riding, it should suit you just fine.
I second the suggestion for a hardtail MTB. If you want to save some $$$ look on Craiglist for a used bike made by one of the bigger brands like Specialized, Trek, Kona, Giant, etc. Stay away from department store bikes that someone bought last year because it looked flashy but is now selling it because it's a piece of crap. Slap some 1.5" slicks on that MTB and start riding. As you get better and more confident (and maybe even shed a few pounds) you can start test riding bikes that appeal to you to get a better idea of what you want to upgrade to once you have the cash. Everyone has an opinion, and many people will name different bikes, brands, etc... One that was never really mentioned to me (which I ended up getting) was/is a type of "Comfort" bike. A more upright riding posture, 2" tires - not the fastest bike, and by the time you are knocking out 50 mile rides on a regular basis you will most likely have out-grown it. I *hope* to outgrow my first Bike and get a LHT - as that is both my dream and my goal.
But to be honest, I actually did ride a Surly "Long Haul Trucker" and found it very uncomfortable to my 370ish 6' body (30" inseam, 60" waist at the time, now a 56" waist).
I landed on a "pedal-forward" comfort Bike. All I strongly suggest is this; think about RIGHT NOW, not down the road, but what looks good to you, makes you want to get on it and ride, and FEELS good to you! That's the ticket!
Whether it is a used hard-tail, a new road bike, a Hybrid, comfort, whatever - you are the guy that needs to be able to ride it, be comfortable on it, and like it!
My LBS (Local Bike Shop) is working with me and is very understanding of my concerns with my weight. Wheels *are* an issue. As was pointed out to me, 29 wheels with 32 spokes are stronger than 700 wheels with 36 spokes. Without planning it, the Bike I bought has 21 gears and is about as low geared you can get without going to an off-road bike (better for me on hills).
The short answer is, yes you can if you want to and are willing to do it! I also had my left knee replaced bout 16 weeks ago, and the Bicycle (and the answers I got here) is what made me finally pull the trigger on the replacement! because I WANT to ride again!! I am losing weight and replacing the knee to ride, rather than riding to lose weight - my focus is a desire to ride, and i will ride better with the:
By quitting smoking
By killing the Pepsi habit (not done yet)
Where is home for you? Close or in Ohio by chance? While many here once were at or close or above your weight, I am currently right there with you. Because of my new knee 'Frank', I only have like 12 miles on my Bike to date - but am riding a stationary at least 30 minutes M-F (lunchtime at work).
