Its wheel building time

It is time for me to build 6 wheels for my bikes now.

2 for my current ride, my 1986 Cannondale ST400. I use it as my rando/training rig. I am going with the Mavic A719 here, 32h in the front with 1.8 straight gauge spokes and a sealed Campy Veloce hub for the day time hub, I built up a set of 36 hole A719's last year for it using a freewheel hub so I am going to cannabalize that rear wheel and move up to 10s index (I am still keeping the DT shifters though) on Campy Veloce hubs and I am keeping the generator hub build for nighttime riding. I run 700x32C Michelin City tires on this @ around 70PSI in the front and 80 PSI in the rear. I also order some Schwalbe clearance Speed Cruiser's in 700X30C to use as event tires, they were like $14 ea so i found it hard to resist.

Daytime Front Wheel:
Rim: Mavic A719
Hub: Campagnolo Veloce 32h
spokes: 3X Wheelsmith 15ga

Nighttime Front Wheel (Already Built):
Rim: Mavic A719
Hub: SRAM i-Light 36h
spokes: 3X Wheelsmith 14ga

Rear Wheel:
Rim: Mavic A719
Hub: Campagnolo Veloce 36h
spokes: 3X Wheelsmith 14ga-15ga-14ga non-drive side, 15ga drive side
Cassette: Campagnolo 10s, 13-26

2 for my use to be ride, my 1986 Cannondale SR300. I started on it and love it and want to ride it on short rides again but got tired of having to rebuild the hubs everytime we get a little dust, which is often (they are old Campy Gran Sport Tipo hubs on the first set of wheels I ever built, I plan using these on an old restore project one day)
I run 700X28C on this bike and will use these wheels as my event wheels also, probably swapping them onto the ST400 with the schwalbes.

Daytime Front Wheel:
Rim: Mavic Open Pro
Hub: Campagnolo Veloce 32h
spokes: 3X Wheelsmith 15ga

Rear Wheel:
Rim: Mavic Open Pro
Hub: Campagnolo Veloce 32h
spokes: 3X Wheelsmith 14ga-15ga-14ga non-drive side, 15ga drive side
Cassette: Campagnolo 10s, 13-26

and finally 2 wheels for my Gary Littlejohn cruiser I am going to get back into shape.
It isn't stock any more (It got hit with a tree by a cat 2 racer that wanted to cross train with the BMX kids back around '84 or '85, he had a hard time steering through two trees at the bottom of a jump without any wheels on the ground, I still don't know why, we did it ) and I have had to do some frame mods done to keep it going but I love this cruiser.

Front Wheel:
Rim: UKAI 26x1.50
Hub: Phil Wood 36h
spokes: 3X Wheelsmith 14ga

Rear Wheel:
Rim: UKAI 26x1.50
Hub: Phil Wood 36h
spokes: 3X Wheelsmith 14ga

Wheels first then I will begin swapping out the drive train. I will probably post that in the C&V forum.

I love building wheels...

I'll be doing some wheelbuilding this weekend, too. Pulling the Ultegra hub from a Performance OP/Ultegra house build and lacing it into a mirror polished Sun CR-18, 3x with DT Champion spokes.
The front is a matching CR-18 and DT Champions 3x to a SON28.

So how do you like your SRAM iLight hub? I've been looking for an inexpensive generator to throw on my singlespeed, and it's a toss up between the iLight and a Shimano 3N71.

I like the Sram. I still think it has to much preload on the bearings which I may look at later... but so far it has been good. I am getting a little more pronounced "generator" buzz here the last couple of times I have used it but i don't really know if i have gotten used to it not being on or what. There is another gentleman that has one in the electronics forum hooked up to his commuter using a LightOn! and he likes his Sram also. I got it because I wanted sealed bearings and that left this one or a SON (which i wouldn't mind having but man... that initial outlay gets you)

I have a SON28 and it was a chunk of change, for sure. But for the combination of quality, durability, repair policy, and (let's be realistic) just flat out bling factor, it was a good investment for my rando/commuter. I certainly don't feel compelled to buy one for my singlespeed, which is a conversion on a late 80s bike I rescued from a dumpster. hahaha. Fiddy dolla bicycle with a $300 front hub is not in my future.
