Bravo!

I have some old spandex shorts, but I don't wear them anymore. I'm too lazy to wash them after every time I get on my bike, which is almost everyday. A Brooks, some form fitting boxer briefs and climbing shorts/shants make a pretty comfortable combo that's good for 50+ mile rides. Climbing shorts stretch good, are close fitting to the thigh, have low waists and high backs and don't bind or restrict movement.

Beyond 60+ mile rides, I'd start thinking about bike shorts and butt butt'r.

My name is Mike and I'm proud to wear spandex. Cycling would be quite painful otherwise.

BTW - I live in Sharpsburg (very close to PTC). If you're interested in a group ride, they have a beginner and intermediate ride from the Trek PTC store every Saturday morning at 8am. Bicycles Unlimited also has a group ride during the week. In fact, I'll probably do the one they are having today at 6pm. Check out the Southside Cycling Club for a full calendar of events around our area.

That sounds pretty much like my style. I've found the combination of boxer briefs, comfortable shorts/knickers/pants, and my B17 to be about as good as it gets. You really don't need special clothes to ride a bike, although sometimes they do make things more comfortable. My wife bought me a pair of thermal lycra tights for Christmas and I have to admit they are very nice when the temps get down around freezing. When I first put them on I did look a lot like Mr. Incredible trying to fit into his old superhero costume but oh well.

bautieri; It's been a while since I've been on this site, but if you actually read my comment you would have noticed that i never said that he should run out and get a Brooks, I said to get a saddle that fits RIGHT!!!!! I do however do ride a Brooks Swift ti. Just thought I'd clear things up.

I'm 5'11" 270 and wear mtb shorts. I have Hoss Ponderosa (passable) and on the recommendation of this forum, I got a pair of Aerotech Designs "Cargo shorts" which I feel are more comfortable (although they don't have side pockets, be aware of that!)

So I wear mtb and mtb "style" padded bike shorts on my road bike. I also have Specialized white mtb platform pedals on my road bike. I'm comfortable for the most part, and the small niggling discomforts I have are not issues with the shorts.

I'm definitely in the minority on my Sunday rides, as 99% of the road bike folks are in Spandex and jerseys. I wear tennis shoes, mtb shorts, and a tee shirt. I have yet to find a reason to wear the shorts, or get a jersey. I'm comfortable, having fun, and getting exercise - which is what it's all about for me. At some point, as I get more into cycling and lose weight/get faster, I may want to wear Spandex and jerseys, but I'll buy that stuff because I want to wear it, not because I worry about what some stranger might think.

I like the cargo shorts over bibs for longer rides. I wish I could go for 40 or 50 mile rides with just shorts or regular street clothes, but I can't. The wicking clothing is a necessity for me, and padded shorts for anything over about 20 miles(my commute is 16.5 a day ,so that's not a big deal ,though by day 4 I can be getting a little tender). I get chafed shortly after that - never a good thing!

Some things are just rude to wear in public.
Speedos, men in daisy dukes, and large people in spandex being a few.

Yea, it tends to be more comfortable to have the boys supported, but put some shorts on or something. Let the tight tights be for women going to yoga, strippers, and the cycling super heroes.

I rock cargo shorts over "tights" without a pad when touring, works perfect and spares folks the mental scarring.
I wear boxer-briefs for regular stuff, and even for rides around 30 miles without issue, and I sweat a lot more more than the average man.
HTFU (not really, just have some compassion for fellow man.)

Also, if you're riding in full kit, and not being paid to, you're falling into a fad, much like a hipster, just with different clothes.

Putting in a 5.000 + mi season dosnt leave much time for banter on forms, but it does help to read the whole quote. This season I will say that the riding was spectular, alot of the roads that were lunar terraine amazingly got a fresh coat of pavement, and the weather was great. How was your season???

does anyone have a suggestion for a cheap liner for road cycling.

I want to wear something on top but could use the cushion and other benefits a cycling shorts give

I could not agree with bbeck this more, I too was at 347 lbs when I started riding. I thought that mtb shorts would be fine and they did work I still use them today. But with that said I talked to the people at my lbs and got bibs and jerseys no logos on either and have never looked back either. I don't care what anyone thinks about what I look like on the trail or what the people at the office say. I figure I am out getting thinner and healther too and they are not. +1 for me -1 for them.. Oh yea I have been using the Aero Tech Designs shorts, bibs, and jerseys as they seem to be the only ones that have stuff for the clydes that fits right.

I find spandex, alone, to be much, much more comfortable out on the road, especially in hot conditions. I wear gym shorts over top while I'm in town; then remove them once I cross the outer belt. That said, it took a long time riding uncomfortably for me to finally make that decision. When I find myself riding in town in just spandex, I will truly be liberated. You'll never find me in anything but black, with a solid color jersey. I'm a bit of a snob that way.

If you are comfortable and don't have a reason to use the gear then you don't need the gear.

I wear bike shorts where ever I ride and usually have a some stupid annoying jersey (no pro kits here except a t-mobile jersey because it was xxl and half price)
so I am not a lance wannabe but a jan wannabe.

We wear clothing that is FUNCTIONAL for bicycling. Spandex bike shorts serve a specific purpose, just like a baseball mitt. They have flat seams and no seams where they will cause chafing and irritation. They have padding in the butt and crotch so you have some extra padding where you and your body interact with the bike the most. . That's also why we wear gloves. The legs are extra long, so you don't chafe when your leg rubs against the top tube and the inside of the saddle. . . . We also wear bright colored jerseys with pockets in the rear and zippers inthe front. The pockets in the rear help us to not lose those items that would ordinarily fall out of forward facing pockets. The zippers allow us to take the jersey off when we need to (like if your wearing bibs and nature calls) and the bright colors help those people with the 3000lb bombs see us, so they can try to aim AWAY from us! By the way. . . unless you really want to have saddle sores or need to know what a blistered butt feels like, you DON"T Wear anything under your cycling shorts but BUTT BUTTER!!! This isn't about modesty. . . its about self preservation. Trust me! you don't want to find out for yourself! But if you must, go out and ride 30-50 miles in 90 degrees and let me know what you find out. . .

Not very good. I sat a good portion of the season out while recovering from a knee surgery, just got back on my bike last week. I missed a lot of great weather and a summer of commuting. The time off has made me rather grumpy.

I also can't figure out why so many guys that used to play team sports when they were young have a problem with spandex. American football pants are just really thick spandex, with pockets for a few pads, and you had to take gang showers with 20-40 of your closest friends after football, basketball, baseball, soccer, and wrestling practice when I was in school.

Besides, they ARE NOT equivalent to wearing a speedo or a thong. I mean...I would not wear them to go grocery shopping, but anytime you are on the bike, a decent-fitting pair should be just fine.
