I joined the club today.
The 0mph crash club that is, lol. And to add insult to injury, right in front of a car full of ladies.

I renewed my membership last Saturday. I pulled up to a light in the right tire track of the right lane. My wife pulled up to my right, partially blocking the right turn lane. I shifted the bike to the left to make room for her but didn't unclip my left foot or lift the bike to get the tires off the ground. She thought me chivalrous, I thought me stupid. I'm going with her assessment.

I think it was the second or third time I rode that I was inducted. I had just ridden up a monsterous mountain (ok fine it was a slight incline you wouldn't even notice...) and I was going to turn around and go back but decided to stop and look around, rest a bit and stretch. At the top I turned around, braked to a stop, put my right leg out and leaned on it. Somehow it had disappeared, completely unusable, and I continued my lean into a roll on my shoulders.
Thankfully a car was riding by at that exact moment and I hoped they laughed good. I rolled into a crouched position (crouching clyde, hidden leg strength) and tried to stand up. I think I made it an inch and started to roll back down but got my left leg out in front of me and "stretched" it for the other passing vehicles...I couldn't help but laugh at how pathetic that was. After several weeks I now laugh at that incline and an even bigger hill near it.

There is photographic evidence of my last escapade. Last Saturday I rode with Bautieri and we came to this nice stretch of road. He decided to take I pic. I was in the way. Stupidly I thought I could shimmy out of the way without unclipping my left foot.
This is the result:

And this is what we were looking at.

Well at least your OK, I did that once, luckily no one saw me but I fracured the radial head of my elbow by using my hands to break the fall.

I fractured my radial head in a bike accident once. Painful as anything; I'd also fractured a rib in the crash, and that didn't hurt anything like the radial head injury. In my case, I was riding home from the local bike shop, who'd just replaced my sorry brakes, and at one point on the ride, muscle memory took over, and I squeezed the levers like I needed to before replacing the brakes. Ouch.

Well, I don't name this stuff. But there's a bone in your elbow called the radius; one end is its head. When you (instinctively) put your hands out as you fall, the impact can hit you just wrong, and fracture the head of your radius, which is a radial head fracture. Cyclist2000 and I seem to have both been through this.

See, I am a PRO at falling - between my size and my knee, I (used to) fall a LOT! And, at my size, you do NOT try to "break your fall" or you will *break* stuff! You learn how to tuck and roll (but not into brambles), or tuck your head and arms and take it on the shoulder...
/knock wood
Never broke an arm or wrist or elbow ever...

Being the non-conformist that I am, no longer worry about such things. In an attempt to conform (breaking from my M.O., joined the club that you all seem to wear like a badge of honor. Everyone kept telling me that it was part of riding clipless. Well, my 3rd fall resulted in two fractured ribs, and a huge amount of time off the bike and sleeping sitting up. I was also banished from watching any form of comedy during this period, as laughter was torture.
So, I took the Highlanders pedals off. Stored the shoes in a box, and put on a great pair of platforms with pins and now, almost 2 years later, I am lovin riding and never worry about the clipless fall.

My favorite entry to "Le Club des Tombče" was last year. I was showing off a little bit, trackstanding on my Fixed Gear outside the ΑФ Sorority on Purdue campus, and tipped over into their rose bushes.
My evil plan worked, apparently, though, because I got swarmed by sorority girls who helped me untangle myself fromn the rose bushes and insisted on treating all the scratches from the thorns. My bubble was burst, though when they told me "it was SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO cool an "OLD GUY" like me rode a fixed gear".
