Email reply from Schwinn regarding a Clyde (230 lbs) and 24 paired spokes rims

Ok...let's not all "kill the messenger" here. I emailed Schwinn a few days ago (I actually forgot I had emailed them) concerning the following question: "Would the double spoke 700c Men's Schwinn Avenue Hybrid Bike be ok for someone who weighs 230 lbs?" Below is their response:

**************************************
HI,

The bicycles are tested up to 250 lbs.
The rims that are the 24 spokes have a higher profile in the shape of a deep V and enhances the strength of the rim.
Hope this helps.
Thank you,

Why would anyone kill the messenger? Basically, anyone up to 250lbs should have no problem with their bikes and their 24spoke wheels. That’s a perfectly legitimate claim. They, like most manufacturers have a very wide safety measure built in their claims.

yeah remember that lawyers write these emails not engineers. specialized tried to scare me out of buying a Roubaix by saying the max is 240#. I'm 40-50 over that and haven't had any problems so far (knock on wood)

I'm 245-250 ish and got 6,000+ miles on my Xero 20 / 24 paired spoke wheels.
Haven't been touched since the initial couple hundred mile re-tensioning.

Rhetorical question:
Have you ever seen all the weight limit warning decals on ladders? Just wondering why they aren't on bicycles? Hmmmmm.........

just sayin.......

Either way, I don't really cae but I would not use 24 spokes. I just think it's funny how things are alwys worded to avoid the question.

Question: Would the double spoke 700c Men's Schwinn Avenue Hybrid Bike be ok for someone who weighs 230 lbs?

Response: The bicycles are tested up to 250 lbs.

He never said the wheels, he kind of sort, of covers them in a seperate statement!

Yeah. I had those wheels - I have a Schwinn hybrid. The wheels lasted me just a couple hundred miles before the rear was toast. Granted, I was well over 250 when I started riding last year (still got some ways to go)... Other BF members I've met with the same bike as me have had issues w/ those wheels and they were less than 250 IIRC. The frame will do you well. The wheels now. Like Beanz said, Schwinn/Pacific didn't directly answer your question...

Tested to 250 pounds vs. durable for 250 pounds is a big difference. They might last a lap or two around the factory floor, fresh off the assembly line for their QC rider.
Will they last for 5000 miles on chip-seal or chuck holed roads in the real world? Maybe... maybe not.
Ride 'em and write us a review. I find that real world product reviews from customers are better indicators of product performance than a manufacturer's statement.

I have the same wheels.

I ride the Schwinn Trailways, almost same bike as the Avenue, My current weight is 185,
doctor visit today. This weight limit started me thinking, A lot of my biking is commuting to the store shopping. Just last night, in the panniers, case of water, 12 pack beer, 10 pound bag of ice, not counting the weight of the rack, panniers, tool kit, etc...its a 12 mile round trip, with 1/2
mile bumpy gravel road, I have had no problems with them so far, and they are a doubled walled rim, but if someone was already close to the 250 mark, would that leave much for carrying a lot
of extra things ? Just a thought.. Richard
