New to this forum, Beginning to ride again

Howdy all, I guess I am a Clydesdale. I am 6'3 250lbs. I used to ride a ton a couple of years ago. 40-50 miles per day. It was relatively flat (I lived in Illinois). Now I live in SW Missouri there are a ton of hills down here lol. I jumped on my new bike (Wal-Mart Special) and thought I would go for a decent ride like I used to... HAH!!!! 3 miles into the ride I was winded so bad I thought I was going to pass out. These hills are tough, I will keep with it though. I will keep everyone posted on my weight loss .

Out fishing with Annie on his lap, a cigar in one hand and a ginger ale in the other, watching the sunset.

Welcome ( The Hills )

Since you live in a really hilly area like I do, do not worry about the miles so much, try setting
time limits, for example: Last night I was going to ride from 7:00 to 8:00 pm. but at 7:30 still
feeling strong rode till 8:00 then turned around, back home at 9:00 thus 2 hour bike ride...I
have know idea how far, ( took computer off ) had to push a few hills, but none the less 2
hour work out...I know the miles already on a lot of my different rides, but never took this route
before, It has the longest and most hills, but felt great when I got back..Good Luck ! ! and
don't let the hills get you down... Richard

I feel ya! I just started riding again in April after about 8 years off the bike... and previously living in largely flat areas. Now I have a 10% grade to get out of my street, what a warmup.

This morning I went for a 22 mile ride (longest in who knows how long) and climbed the freaking Alpe d'Huez! My lying computer says it's only a 6% grade but I know better...

Fortunately, once I got to the top about 80 cyclists from a local club came around the corner and passed me like I was standing still. SO I got that little ego boost too.

Keep at it and treat your self to a nice bike when you hit some milestone you consider significant...

Thanks for the inspiration all . Yeah the roads here are not rider friendly that is for sure. Unless it is 3am lol. There are no shoulders on the road I live on. It has a ton of great hills though. I do however have a huge road that is cut through some forests, I have been riding them. I am thinking of getting a headlight and tail light for my bike so I can ride the roadways at night.
