50+ Clydes Racing RAAM (Race Across America)2010

For those of you who think being old and being Clydes means you must be slow may want to keep an eye on my team this year during RAAM. My team is Team JDRF http://www.teamjdrf.org/, supporting the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. We are a mixed(co-ed) four tandem team. No, we're not all clydes but a number of us are and we average over 50years old. You can follow us on our website above or the official RAAM website http://www.raceacrossamerica.org/raa..._webcat_id=109. I don't know if we can win outright because there are some very fast teams out there including the reigning champs, Team Type1 which has 8 professional racers on their team but I expect that we'll be somewhere near the front. The solo riders start Wednesday and the teams start on Saturday. It'll be lots of fun, 3050 miles in 6 days or less! Beanz, you know your jealous!

Dang, you can't edit the title! That should be 50+years old, not 50 + clydes...

Mr. Beanz isn't the only one jealous. Count me in. If I were younger, healthier, and insane I'd try that ride too.

Never count yourself out! We're no spring chickens ourselves. There was a team of 70+ year olds who did it a few years back. All it takes is a decision to say "I'm going to do it!" Healthier comes from making the right decisions, which it sounds like your doing with your cycling as well as your "cross training" hikes in the mountains. Along with the Team Type1 racer boys there is also a Team Type 2 entered. They are a bunch of guys like you and me who all happen to have Type 2 diabetes. There was one guy on the team last year who was easily 300+lbs. They weren't the fastest team out there by far but they finished. You just have to believe!

Good luck in the race! Will your team be doing updates on the web as the race goes on?

I met one of the TT1 members this year at the Seattle TdC events. You've got your work cut out for you to beat that team... Best of luck, and go get 'em!

That's a good question. In past years we did. I'll have to ask. I do know if you sponsor a time station you will get a thank you call from one of the racers when we pass through your time station. No matter what time we go through the time station.

Those guys are fast! There are eight of them and they are all Pro or wantabe Pro racers. I don't know if it is realistic thinking that we can hang with them or not. If not, I don't think we'll be that far behind them at the end. They are definitely the rabbits. It'll be fun to watch.

Do the riders STOP at the Check Points?

Normally, No. The riders keep going. Often times the crews and team riders who are not on the bike will stop at checkpoints if they are manned. Solo riders will only stop at a check point if they have a specific reason, such as sleep, rest or a bike repair type situation.

Homeyba and his team mates are leading their division at check point 25, 1455 miles into the race. If you get a chance go out and see Homeyba go by.
