Friday Ride - if you had one, share it!
I'll start.
Left the house a bit after 9 with everything I needed in my pockets (MTB shorts) -- tube, patch kit, multi tool, money, phone, granola bar. Headed north out of Endicott (NY) on Rt 26. Wasn't sure how far I was going, as there are lots of bailout options. At mile 10, avg speed was just under 18. Mile 12.4 - scared a momma groundhog and her four baby's who were eating grass at the edge of the road. Nice long downhill into Whitney Point, NY, and at mile 20 my avg speed was a bit over 18. Kept going North on Rt 11 to Lisle, then hooked a left toward the tiny little intersection of Richford, NY. Just outside Lisle on Rt 79 I was able to stop and fill up my water bottle from a spring where several locals were filling jugs. Cold, clear...wow...super treat. Gradual climb for about 7 miles or so...payback for that downhill. Ate half my granola bar. Pass one rider going the other way. Hooked another left at Rt 38 and headed south toward Berkshire, and then Newark Valley. There's a clam/seafood distributor between Richford and Berkshire, which has always perplexed me since it truly is in the middle of absolutely nowhwere. And hundreds of miles from the ocean. But their clams are good. Wind picked up so the next 14 or so miles, though mostly flat, were a bit annoying. Stopped in Newark Valley for a break - 10 minutes to refill the water bottle and have a can of Starbucks double shot - ugh. I love coffee, but wnated a cold drink -- wasn't very good. Get going again, knowing my biggest hills are just ahead. Eat the other half of my granola bar (2 bar package). Another left onto 38B, and I start a approx 2 mile 6% uphill. This is about mile 43. I was concerned I would have trouble, and my bailout is to keep goign on 38, and ride an additional 15 miles but mostly flat. DOn't have to use it -- did ok on the hill, keeping it around 8 - 9 mph. Had a couple more good climbs on that road, then retraced part of my departure route. And finally ended with .8 miles of a 7% climb -- the least of three evils to get back to my house (the worst being a .7 mile hill that starts out gradual but hits 11-12%). All in all, a good ride. My longest to date. I'm pretty sure I can tackle a century now, but I'll do a couple more long rides - in the 70/80 mile range, before I do. 57 miles, 2700 feet of climbing, 3 hrs, 28 min rolling time for an avg speed of 16.48 mph...had hoped to keep it over 17, but the hills took it out of me. Total time was about 3 hrs 48 minutes (stopped on the last hill to talk to my buddy who was out in the heat working on his deck). Tomorrow - recovery ride : ) Although I feel pretty good. |

I did a quick 13 mile ride between thunderstorms, and got passed by nine model T fords.
|
Got my wife out early (7:30) and managed 19 miles along the coast before she needed to head over to her mom's house.
|
I'll do 19 to 20 miles tonight. Last night I maintained 19 mph for an hour on the same route.
Tomorrow I'll do a 100k group ride in Wisconsin. Michael |
Shortened ride this morning.
At about 17 miles I started to hear a squeak - back wheel rubbing on brake pad each rotation. Widened brake calipers but rubbing persisted. Went home, 23 miles total for ride, took bike to LBS that had just replace some spokes, readjusted, back in business. Will ride again tomorrow and hope the problem is solved. |
My first ride on a road bike today. Rode only about 6 miles, mostly getting used to clipless pedals and shifting. Rode a mostly flat route from my parking garage towards work, turned around and came back. Saw a few people out on bikes, the only one on a road bike waved. Worked my way gradually into higher traffic until I was confident on the main strip I will most likely take to work.
Do bikers wave at each other and such like the jeep people? Or did I just meet a friendly guy? |

I commuted today. Took an alternate route, about 35 miles round-trip. Morning was beautiful but overcast. Afternoon was partly cloudy and warm. I had a tailwind in both directions. I wish that happened every day.

I rode... .03 miles :twitchy:
As soon as I was about to leave the garage it started raining:cry: |
Just got back from a business trip late last night and was feeling edgy... so I squeezed in a 15 miler just now. I swear I used to be able to sustain 100 rpm and now 85 feels more natural. But today's goal was to try and keep it north of 90 and I did sort of OK at that.
Headwinds both ways and although it's nice to have a MUP duirng commuting hours, it's a PITA having to stop every block and wait for the cars so I can cross. :) |
Got home from work, downed a banana, and did a 15 mile ride through a few nearby developments. It was roasting hot outside, but I really enjoyed the ride.
|
My ride for the day, perfect weather but had to take it easy as I have a race in two days.

I took my first ride in about 8 years today. I bought a Trek 7.3fx a couple of days ago but haven't been able to ride until today. It was probably 2-3 miles total just goofing off around the neighborhood. Sunny and warm here in San Jose so the ride was fantastic.

My 15 y.o. son came along on my ride this afternoon. 28 miles in the foothills here in No CA. A little wind, but a great ride.
|
120 mile ride from my home in Springfield to around Lebanon and back, mixed between bike path and back roads.
|
I did a bit of grocery shopping today. I rode a total of 10 miles and found my favourite breakfast cereal on sale (GoLean crunch -- it's like
an adults Sugar Crisp cereal). Ice cream was too but I didn't want to end up with soup by the time I got it home. The streets were quiet, oddly enough. I'm guessing people went to the pub's after work to watch one of the World Cup matches? |
10 miles today, my normal 10 mile route. Its a good thing I didn't opt for the 13 mile loop, legs were toast after 5 miles :( Lack of sleep this week I think was most of it. BUT, it was a beautiful day and I enjoyed being out even though it hurt more than normal :)
|
I did about 19 miles tonight, up and down a trail, and over Ass-Kick Hill twice. I visited a friend for a while, went by a couple of nice gardens, and got a bug in my eye. It was a great ride - but every bike ride is.
|
Just got back from my first group ride on the mountain bike. Total of about 8+ miles and 1800 feet of climbing. Felt great, may actually jump on the road bike tomorrow for a 30-40 mile loop.
|
my usual commute to work went fine (http://connect.garmin.com/activity/36464072) but on the way home I broke a spoke and had to stop (http://connect.garmin.com/activity/36512947).
annoying thing is that it's a rear-wheel spoke on the drive side, so I can't replace it myself. worst part is that I took it to the LBS where I almost bought this bike (but went the CL route instead), so they are giving me the told-you-so look |
Did a 30mi loop around the lake after work with a friend of mine on the single speed, now I have some great tan lines. Nothing note worthy happened except for some unreal humidity. After the ride we got some delicious Pho from the local Vietnamese restaurant to help rehydrate and re-energize.

A couple Fridays ago rode Germany to France ~ 76km

Two miles to test the bike for today's 38 mile trail ride. I rode in street clothes, which I rarely do. The shock of seeing The Historian riding in cargo pants and a t shirt, with his right pant leg tucked into his sock, no doubt caused a dog that ignored him on previous rides to give chase.
