The back bay is a really nice area but can become crowded with walkers, skaters, bikers, dogs. There are a few bike shops in your area where people gather to ride, you might want to check out some of them. The back bay trail connects up with a trail that follows the creek into Irvine.

Ride SART (Santa Ana River Trail). Heck, you can get it right between Newport and Huntington from PCH (can't miss the river). You can travel 30 miles inland and 30 back if you wish (60 roundtrip).

We live a good 40 mintues drive (clear day) from the trail so we do it mostly on weekends. Geeze, I wish we lived closer.
